Raven Symone Came Out Via Twitter And It Was Super Cute, But Can We All Leave Her Alone Now?

Raven Symone October 2012 Disney Premiere

So apparently I?m the one sole being on earth who never heard a ?Raven Symone is probably gay? rumor in the mill of random celebrity rumors, because I didn?t know her sexual preferences were ever a hot topic. ?Now I know they are, because she ?came out? via one singular tweet and every single media outlet went ape shit. ?Everything I?ve read so far has been pretty positive, which is wonderful. ?But from what I?ve read about her personally, her sexual orientation has been subjected to public scrutiny before and she hasn?t been super forthright about it in the past. ?Just because she ?came out? doesn?t mean she?s inviting everyone into her bedroom for a lesbian love-sesh viewing, mmmmmkay?

See? ?Super cute, right? ?It?s short, sweet, happy, and gets the point across sans Barbara Walters sit-down interview or US Weekly cover spread. ?Perfect! ?After all the rumors and speculation (which I?m seriously kind of stunned about being out of the loop on? I?m practically omnipotent about celebrity news no one cares about), she was able to control the message and have it released the way she saw fit. ?Which is definitely part of the beauty of social media, I might add.

Most likely anticipating her message would catch on like wildfire, Raven gave a follow-up statement to E! News:

?I am very happy that gay marriage is opening up around the country and is being accepted. I was excited to hear today that more states legalized gay marriage. I, however am not currently getting married, but it is great to know I can now, should I wish to.?

?

Great! I?m happy for her. ?Maybe Benedict Cumberbatch can officiate her future wedding! Now can we let her get on with her life? ?That?s all, folks.

ASUS launches VivoMouse, a wireless optical mouse with a multi-touch trackpad (video)

ASUS launches VivoMouse, a wireless optical mouse with a multitouch trackpad

ASUS was rather cryptic about this little peripheral with its "It'll move you" teaser, but now we get it. Dubbed the VivoMouse, ASUS claims this to be the world's first mouse-and-touchpad hybrid, and it's also wireless. One bonus feature here is that you can use it as a handheld remote with thumb control -- presumably the thumb stays on that circular trackpad with ASUS' iconic spin finish. We'll know more once we get our hands on this optical mouse in a moment, so keep an eye out for an update here.

Update: Hands-on gallery added below, and there's also a demo video after the break. The VivoMouse is actually slimmer than we expected, and when held in air, you can scroll pages by simply stroking along the lower edge of the circular trackpad. Other usual Windows 8 gestures are supported, including pinch-to-zoom, rotate, start menu toggle and sidebar toggle. The LED underneath the device uses blue light for better tracking as well. It's a pretty slick device, but hopefully it's won't be too pricey, either.

Illinois GOP elects new chairman after infighting

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) ? After months of public infighting and constant bickering over issues that also continue to divide the national party, Illinois Republicans selected a new leader Saturday who they hope is the best option to bring factions of the party together after its poor showing in last November's elections.

The party's central committee chose committeeman and lobbyist Jack Dorgan of Rosemont as the party's chair for the next year. He replaces outgoing chairman Pat Brady, who resigned last month after conservatives complained about his public support for gay marriage and other leadership issues.

Over the last few weeks, Dorgan, 53, emerged as a consensus choice with the potential to bridge gaps between the party's conservative and moderate wings. Party leaders are seeking ways to appeal more to youths, women and minorities after a drubbing in state elections that allowed Democrats to nearly sweep contested congressional seats and achieve supermajorities in both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly.

"After the last six months, the party really needs to refocus on the basics," House Republican Leader Tom Cross said. Dorgan told the committee he has 30 years of political experience, including as a legislative aide for state Rep. Roger McAuliffe, senior staff for Gov. Jim Thompson's office and on Gov. Jim Edgar's cabinet.

"He has the strengths of knowing the fundamentals of party basics and of party structure," Cross said.

Along with Cross, Dorgan had the backing of U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, state Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka and members of the Illinois congressional delegation.

"I know Jack will be a leader who will focus on keeping our party energized heading into the 2014 election and trust he will work to ensure the Illinois GOP is inclusive so that we continue to live up to our full potential as a party," Kirk said in a statement.

The other six candidates included former Congressman Joe Walsh, former lieutenant governor candidate Don Tracy, former Cook County state's attorney candidate Lori Yokoyama and businessman Jim Nalepa. State Sen. Matt Murphy of Palatine removed his name from consideration late last month.

Brady resigned from his post May 8, citing his wife's battle with cancer and his desire to focus on family after six years in Republican politics.

He came under fire from conservatives earlier this year after calling the party "on the wrong side of history" for opposing gay marriage. Critics said they had several issues with Brady's leadership.

Brady faced several ouster attempts by state central committeemen led by state Sen. Jim Oberweis of Sugar Grove and Jerry Clarke, former chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren. Illinois Republicans' fight over gay marriage and the leadership of the unpaid, often thankless post has served as a microcosm of differences and problems within the national party. Walsh, who lost a bid for re-election last November to Democrat Tammy Duckworth, told committeemen Saturday that even the private, closed-door process of selecting a chairman was emblematic of problems.

"We should be speaking to a ballroom of 1,000 Republicans right now," Walsh said. "My god, folks, the party is breaking. If we don't pick someone who will excite and energize the base, the party will wither away.

Dorgan's lobbying firm has political connections on both sides of the aisle. Dorgan's has a practice with James McPike, a former House Majority Leader under powerful Democratic Speaker Michael Madigan. Their firm, Dorgan ? McPike & Associates, has a politically active client list. The firm has donated to former governors George Ryan and Rod Blagojevich, Madigan and the House Republican Organization, among others.

It is not uncommon for lobbyists to take top party posts. Former Mississippi governor Haley Barbour worked as a Washington lobbyist before being named Republican National Committee Chair in 1993.

Dorgan would not specify Saturday if he backs gay marriage, only that he wants the Republican party to be more of a "big tent" organization. "Legislators should legislate," he said of the issue, which failed to come to a vote in the state Capitol, before session adjourned Friday. He said he has a 90-day plan of action to put the party position for the 2014 election.

"Whether you like government or you don't, it's there and it's a necessity," Dorgan said of taking on the chairmanship.

Committeemen's votes were weighted by primary turnout in the districts they represent, giving the most politically active places the most power. Dorgan was elected with 59 percent of the total vote on the first ballot, party officials said.

"I had different thoughts, but Jack won fair and square," Oberweis, who backed Nalepa, said. Moving forward, he pledged to do everything he could to help Dorgan in his new role.

With another election for chairman next April looming, Dorgan, by some, is clearly being viewed in a temporary capacity.

"The next chair is for the time being a perhaps temporary successor until the new one is officially elected," State Sen. Kirk Dillard, a Hinsdale Republican and likely 2014 Republican primary bidder, said.

But Dorgan's performance could earn him a permanent four-year spot. "Time will tell," Cross said.

Internet sensation Grumpy Cat to star in upcoming film

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Grumpy Cat, who won fame on the Internet for her permanent scowl, will be getting Hollywood treatment in an upcoming film, the feline's manager Ben Lashes said in an email.

Grumpy Cat, whose real name is Tarder Sauce, went viral last year after the brother of owner Tabatha Bundesen posted a photo of the cat on the user-submitted social news site Reddit.

The film will be produced by Broken Road Productions, which has been behind such films as the Kevin James' 2009 comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," and Adam Sandler's 2011 comedy "Jack and Jill."

Photos of Grumpy Cat, whose scowl Bundesen said was caused by feline dwarfism, gained a following with ironic user-generated captions, like "I had fun once ... it was awful" and "Of all the nine lives I've lived ... this is the worst."

Grumpy Cat is no stranger to cameras, having already appeared on U.S. morning show "Good Morning America" and CNN's Anderson Cooper's daytime talk show, "Anderson Live."

Grumpy Cat will join the ranks of Hollywood's other four-legged furry A-listers such as Uggie the dog from Oscar-winning film "The Artist" and Buddy the basketball-playing Golden Retriever from 1997's "Air Bud."

Toronto mayor vows to run again despite crack scandal, staff exodus

TORONTO (Reuters) - Toronto Mayor Rob Ford lost two more staff members on Thursday, two weeks after allegations first surfaced that the leader of Canada's largest city was caught smoking crack cocaine on camera, something he has strongly denied. Security ushered policy advisor Brian Johnston out of city hall around midday on Thursday, and he told reporters he had resigned. Kia Nejatian, the mayor's executive assistant, also left his job, the city confirmed in a statement sent to local media.

Embattled IRS staff remain in jobs despite U.S. tax review scandal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - They've been scorned in televised congressional hearings for unfairly abusing tax laws, threatened with questioning in a criminal investigation and accused of using federal jobs to push a political agenda. At this point in the saga surrounding the Internal Revenue Service and its use of "Tea Party" and other search terms to flag conservative groups while reviewing their applications for tax-exempt status, no one appears to have lost their job.

Ricin attack puts spotlight on Bloomberg's gun control push

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Letters laced with the deadly poison ricin sent to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the lobbying organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns illustrate how the group has emerged as a focal point of anger for opponents of gun control. Three letters containing an "oily substance" that turned out to be ricin were intercepted on their way to Bloomberg's office and the mayors group. A similar envelope was sent to President Barack Obama, the Secret Service confirmed on Thursday.

Baghdad bombs kill 25 in Sunni-Shi'te bloodletting

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A series of bombs battered Shi'ite and Sunni Muslim neighborhoods across Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least 25 people in the worst wave of sectarian violence since civil war five years ago. The bloodletting reflects increasing conflict between Iraq's majority Shi'ite leadership and the Sunni minority, many of whom feel unfairly marginalized since the 2003 fall of strongman Saddam Hussein, a Sunni.

Germans irked as Hollande says EU cannot dictate French reforms

PARIS/BERLIN (Reuters) - President Francois Hollande pledged on Thursday to carry out long overdue reforms of France's pension system and labor markets but said it was up to Paris, not the European Commission, to determine how they are implemented. At a joint news conference with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Hollande defended his comment that the EU executive cannot "dictate" reforms to member states - a defiant, nationalist tone that angered Germany's ruling conservatives.

Moscow suggests missiles have yet to reach Assad

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Thursday Moscow was still committed to sending him advanced anti-aircraft weapons, although a source close to the Russian defense ministry said the missiles had yet to arrive. The prospect of the missiles arriving is a serious worry for Western and regional countries opposing Assad which have called on Moscow not to send them.

U.N. concerned about North Korean defectors in China

GENEVA (Reuters) - A United Nations human rights investigator and the U.N. refugee agency voiced concern on Thursday about the fate of nine North Korean defectors, some of them children, who were sent back to China this week from Laos after trying to cross the border. Chinese authorities are obliged under international law not to return them to North Korea, where they could face persecution and possibly death, Marzuki Darusman, U.N. special rapporteur on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), said.

Nigeria arrests Lebanese suspected of Hezbollah ties

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) - Nigerian authorities said on Thursday they had arrested three Lebanese in northern Nigeria on suspicion of being members of Hezbollah and that a raid on one of their residences had revealed a stash of heavy weapons. The three suspects were arrested between May 16 and May 28 in the north's biggest city Kano, the city's military spokesman Captain Ikedichi Iweha said in a statement. All had admitted to being members of Hezbollah under questioning.

Tribes clash over Darfur gum arabic land, 64 killed

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Clashes between tribes in Sudan's Darfur region over land producing the gum arabic stabilizer used in soft drinks have killed more than 60 people and displaced 6,500 other, police and the United Nations said. The fluid gum cut from the acacia trees that have grown on the land for years is one of Sudan's most important agricultural export products but part of the output is being smuggled over the border into Chad, where it is sold for hard currency.

Ex-general wants post-2014 troop levels announced

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The former top U.S. commander in Afghanistan called on the White House Friday to announce how many troops it intends to leave in that country after 2014.

Retired Gen. John Allen said Afghans need certainty on how many U.S. troops will stay behind after the majority complete their withdrawal by Dec. 31, 2014, before they will choose to side with the Afghan government or the Taliban.

"In the absence of clarity about the future, you'll do what you know," he said. "If...taking no position...has kept you alive," Afghans will continue to hedge their bets, he said.

Allen was speaking as the Center for a New American Security, a Washington-based think tank, released a report by him, former top U.S. defense official Michele Flournoy and The Brookings Institution's defense expert Michael O'Hanlon.

The report warns the United States and its allies could risk losing any achievements if the drawdown ahead of the December 2014 deadline is accelerated or if the international community skimps on continuing aid to the country after 2014.

All three authors urged the Obama administration to announce troop numbers

"I'd like to see it soon," Allen said. "What the president has said to the Afghans is we will not abandon you," Allen said. "What is missing right now...are the specifics associated with that." Allen had recommended a post-2014 U.S. force of 13,600, he said, supported by additional NATO troops. Officials have said they are considering a range of between 8,000 and 12,000 troops.

White House spokeswoman Laura Lucas said "the president is still reviewing options from his national security team and has not made a decision about the size of a possible U.S. presence after 2014."

Allen retired, citing his wife's health, and declined to be considered for the post of NATO supreme commander. He was cleared of wrongdoing after he was caught up tangentially in the scandal that forced the retirement of former CIA Director David Petraeus, who was discovered to have had an affair with his biographer. Allen now advises Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Middle East peace talks.

Flournoy, now back at the think tank that she helped found, is a former Defense Department undersecretary. She said she believed President Barack Obama would be making the troop announcement soon.

"The internal discussions are making progress, and I think the administration understands the importance of clarifying these details," she said.

Allen also said that knowing the post-2014 troop number would help silence Taliban claims that all U.S. troops are leaving.

"Ultimately the announcement of the decision...makes it more difficult for the Taliban leadership to justify continued struggle," Allen said.

Allen said Pakistan would be more likely to help Afghanistan reconcile with the Taliban leadership that takes shelter in Pakistan's tribal areas, if it knew the size of the U.S. force that would stay on.

Allen and his co-authors acknowledge the U.S. campaign, and the surge of U.S. troops at the start of Obama's first term, did not bring the stability originally hoped for.

"Corruption in Kabul has remained very serious, Pakistan's cooperation with the war effort has been fickle and the enemy has proved quite resilient," the report said.

O'Hanlon added that Afghans need to be told in a nonconfrontational way that if Congress or the international community believes the elections to come in 2014 are corrupt, they won't be willing to keep donating so much money to the country.

The authors acknowledged that the goals Washington originally set for Afghanistan have shrunk from the hoped-for economic and political stability to keeping al-Qaida from using the poor nation as a safe haven.

"While the surge has not achieved everything originally envisioned, the United States can still likely...work with partners to degrade the Taliban-led insurgency and create a strong enough Afghan state to hold the country intact," the report said.

The authors note that in visits to the country, they learned the intelligence community has a bleaker view of the Afghan future than some of the military assessments.

"It was healthy that they acknowledged uncertainty and disagreement rather than trying to impose happy talk or optimistic assessments throughout the military command and intelligence agencies," the report said.
