Exercising and getting fit may protect your heart, even if you have a few extra pounds, according to a study published in the Feb. 14 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC).

The study, which was led by Duck-chul Lee of the University of South Carolina?s Arnold School of Public Health, is one of the first to examine how a change in fitness or fatness (or both) affects development of hypertension, high cholesterol and metabolic syndrome, defined by a large waistline, high triglycerides, high blood sugar while fasting and high blood pressure.

?Although improving fitness and losing fatness is ideally the best combination, our study also shows that as long as individuals maintain their fitness and fatness levels, which is less challenging, they are not likely to be at high risk of developing CVD risk factors,? Lee said.

In an effort to determine how changes in fitness and fatness affect heart health, a U.S. research team studied 3,148 healthy adults in Dallas over a six-year period.

The Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study (ACLS) enrolled healthy men and women between 1979 and 2006, analyzing how their fitness and fatness levels changed over time and how that related to the development of hypertension, metabolic syndrome and hypercholesterolemia. Cardiovascular fitness was measured through a treadmill test, and body fatness was calculated through a skinfold test and body mass index. Fatness and fitness were measured independently and then together to get a complete understanding.

At the end of the study, the researchers found:

? 752 participants had developed hypertension, 426 had developed metabolic syndrome, and 597 participants had developed high cholesterol.

?Participants who maintained or improved their fitness level had a significantly lower risk of developing any of the three risk factors, compared with those whose fitness level had dropped. (24 percent and 23 percent for hypertension, 38 and 41 percent for metabolic syndrome and 25 percent and 26 percent for high cholesterol)

? Individuals who had gained fat had a significantly higher risk for developing any of the three risk factors (24 percent for hypertension, 52 percent for metabolic syndrome and 41 percent for higher cholesterol.)

? The researchers found that maintaining or improving fitness lessened ?although not completely eliminated ?the increased risk caused by gaining fat. Similarly, reducing body fat appeared to counteract part of the increased risk associated with losing fitness. In addition, those who maintained their fitness and fatness did not have higher risks of developing the three risk factors compared to those who gained fitness and lost fatness.

?This study has clinical and public health significance because the finding that improved fitness can reduce some or all of these risk factors associated with increased fatness may help the two-thirds of the U.S. adult population who are overweight or obese,? Lee said.

?These days, extensive attention has been given to obesity and weight loss. However, maintaining or improving fitness, primarily by engaging in regular physical activity, is also at least as important as weight loss for reducing cardiovascular disease in healthy adults.?

The study is the first of its kind to analyze fitness and fatness independently and also adjust for each other and to measure fatness and fitness over time.

* The AFA's One Million Moms, along with One Million Dads, speaks out against what members call the "culture war in America" by launching boycotts and letter-writing campaigns against advertising and television shows deemed objectionable and unhealthy for children. The major issues are TV violence, vulgarity and profanity in media.

* OMM began a campaign against J.C. Penney, faulting the store for selecting Degeneres, when most of the chain's customers are traditional families. OMM says Degeneres was chosen to satisfy a minority and that OMM speaks for the majority. The group also criticizes corporate and customer relations representatives for failing to respond to its complaints. OMM demands J.C. Penney replace Degeneres with someone who is "neutral in the culture war."

* Last week, One Million Moms won another battle against the breast cancer fundraising group Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Part of the Komen donations went to fund mammograms at Planned Parenthood, which sponsors abortion-related services.

* Planned Parenthood cannot use funds earmarked for breast cancer treatment in abortion activities. Republican Congressman Cliff Stearns has launched an investigation to make sure those funds are properly used, reports PBS News Hour. Planned Parenthood was also recently accused of being involved in a sex-trafficking activities, says National Review Online. However, Planned Parenthood says it was a hoax perpetuated by anti-abortion groups.

* Susan G. Komen has pulled its support from Planned Parenthood in light of investigations and pressure from OMM and other religious groups.

* In December, the Florida Family Association, a member group of the AFA, was successful in getting Lowe's to pull its advertisements from TLC's " All-American Muslim " reality television show, reports The Blaze. FFA said the show undermines family values and American democracy with an Islamic agenda.

* The AFA has a boycott against Home Depot, saying the home improvement superstore promotes a gay agenda by participating in gay pride parades and festivals.

While viewers watching CBS's coverage at home were almost certainly begging for Levin to hit the shot from the cactus, almost the entire CBS crew was questioning the decision ... except for one guy

"This isn't a bad idea if he can pop down on top of this," David Feherty said. "He's got five options: He can re-tee, he can play it as it lies, he can take it as far back keeping that point between him and the hole, or he could take two club lengths."

Or the fifth option, which was to go inside the cactus try and hack his way back into play. If you've ever tried option five, you know the final outcome usually ends with ripped clothing and torn ego.

Luckily for Levin, he was able to get the ball in play, but not before suffering the wrath of the cacti. Just second after the shot came out from his the bush and into the first cut, Nick Faldo tried to reverse course from questioning the decision to calling it a smart move.

"Oh, I see," Faldo said. "That was good thinking. But he's still still got a mile [to the hole]."

After panning out to an overhead view to get a better angle of the next shot, the cameras quickly panned back to Levin, who was groaning as his caddie, Mike Hicks, pulled a piece of cactus that was attached to his rib cage.

"He's got a couple of bits on him," Feherty said. "I guarantee you he's got a couple of piece on his calves as well. And there's one on his right buttock."

As CBS zoomed in on Levin getting another piece pulled from his rib cage, he joked with the camera that "you don't want to hit one there". Hey at least the guy had a sense of humor through the whole moment -- including what happened next when his caddie pulled a piece that was attached to his rear.

It was comical stuff, but you had to feel for Levin. After watching him hit the shot and then suffer the cactus consequences, you knew it was only a matter of time before the moment went viral.
