China claims world's longest high-speed rail line, takes travelers 1,428 miles in a workday

China claims world's longest highspeed rail line, takes travelers 1,428 miles in a workday

China has a thing for pushing the limits of trains. As of today, that includes distance: the country claims to have the world's longest high-speed rail line. Paying ¥865 ($139) will take you 1,428 miles from Beijing in the north to as far as Guangzhou in the south. The 8-hour, 186MPH trip is technically slower than flying, but it's cheaper and potentially less stressful than the often protracted airport boarding process. It's certainly far more viable than the 20-hour rail trip it's replacing, which could lead to some locals choosing a ground route that wasn't even a realistic option until now.

Woodbury House Fire Displaces Family Of 4 ? CBS Minnesota

WOODBURY, Minn. (WCCO) ? Authorities say a family of four is now without a home after a fire caused heavy damage at the residence Thursday morning in Woodbury.

Crews responded to a report of a house fire at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday on the 4500 block of Woodbury Drive. As many as four fire departments had to be called to the scene to help put the fire out. When authorities arrived, the fire was heavy on the second floor of the home and appeared to be spreading to the attic. Authorities said the fire broke about above the chimney in the attic space and burned through the roof of the home.

Authorities said the home is no longer livable.

There was nobody inside the home at the time of the fire and no firefighters were hurt battling the blaze. Authorities said the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Woodbury Fire Department was assisted at the scene by departments by Lake Elmo, Cottage Grove and St. Croix Valley.

Fire officials said the fire serves as a reminder to have your chimney inspected annually.

4 Reasons You're Failing In Your Direct Sales Business ? And How ...

Here?s the cold, hard truth about direct sales ? anybody can do it, but not everyone will, and not everyone should. If you?re in the business, here are four reasons you may be failing at the very career you?re trying to create for yourself ? and how to fix it fast.

1. A career in direct sales takes time - anyone who tries to sell you on overnight profits and get-rich-quick dreams is blowing smoke where the sun don?t shine. The truth is that you need to give yourself a minimum of 6 months of actively working your business to create stability.

Most consultants won?t stick beyond the first three months, which is, ironically, about as long as most companies offer incentives for new consultants. Real success comes after you?ve got systems and support structures in place to to make your business sustainable. That comes with practice, and practice takes time. The most successful consultants and leaders are those that stick with the industry for more than three years. Are you willing to give yourself the time you need to see true success, or are you in it for a quick buck? Your answer will determine your outlook.

2. It?s called ?direct sales? for a reason. There is no such thing as a product that sells itself. I?ve never, in all my days, seen a product leap off a display and into my purse, pull out my credit card, take down all the data, sign my order form, and place itself into my shopping bag for the trip home.

You need to learn some basic sales and marketing skills. There is a sales component to this business, and to pretend otherwise is like sticking your head in the sand during a hurricane. Many companies provide training from a company perspective, but that will only take you so far. You need sales training from an external perspective to have a balanced view about the products and services your offering. Your company is in business to sell stuff and make a profit. They are going to do only as much as necessary to make you a passable consultant. If you want to be successful, you need to be more than passable.

Jeffrey Gitomer said to think of your clients like your spouse. ?Do you want your spouse to be satisfied or loyal?? he says. Do you want your clients to be satisfied or loyal? Passable might get you satisfied customers. Then again, it might not.

3. The most successful consultants invest in their personal and professional development. There?s only so much a company can do to help you learn the skills you need to be one of the top performers in your company. Ask any of the multi-million dollar leaders in your company and they?ll tell you that they had to invest in their own success ? training, conferences, books, seminars, etc. It?s like continuing education in any other industry. Why would you join a direct selling company and think you?d never have to learn another thing as long as you lived? From social media to sales conversion strategies, there is always something to be learning to improve your craft.

4. Direct Selling requires a financial investment. Beyond your initial starter kit (which you might have earned free), there are ongoing expenses for any business. From postage stamps and office supplies to travel and product replenishment ? there is always something to invest in (even if it?s just yourself, see reason number 3). If you?re not willing to set (and stick to) a budget or financial plan for your business, you are out of business before you even begin. Your budget doesn?t need to be huge. You just need to have one and learn to work with it. Set aside a portion of your income for taxes, marketing, and other recurring expenses from the onset. Then you won?t be caught off guard when those expenses come up.

Building any business takes resources. Time, energy, focus, and often times money are the tools that lay the foundation upon which you build success. Get clear on your goals, get clear on the truth about your business, then build success on your own terms.

Pebble smartwatch stops by FCC, tries to prove it's not vaporware

The Pebble smartwatch missed its original September target ship date. Then, it failed to ship in time to stuff stockings this holiday season. And, while we've seen them in person and the company claims a release is imminent, you'd be forgiven for being a bit skeptical. But there is reason to hope: the connected wristwear has officially received a thumbs up from the FCC. What's more, the E-ink timepiece gets the full teardown treatment and comes complete with an owners manual. There's no surprises here, but if you're the impatient type, there should be a few things to keep you occupied until the next delay.

Green Blog: Every Bird Counts, but Some Make the Heart Beat Faster

Binoculars at the ready, a small group of birders fanned out through the field, searching for a brown-and-gray bird that was stubbornly refusing to show itself.

We were looking for a clay-colored sparrow, a rare visitor to the East Coast that had been spotted in this field at the Marshlands Conservancy in Rye, N.Y., over the last week. But while a few sweeps of the field turned up a variety of birds ? including seven other species of sparrows ? the clay-colored sparrow remained out of sight.

As participants in the National Audubon Society?s annual Christmas Bird Count, we were eager to add this unusual species (check out the video above, posted at YouTube by a professional photographer), to the local tally. But we couldn?t spend all day looking for it. We had to cover the area thoroughly and keep count of every individual bird we saw. In the Christmas Bird Count, every bird counts, no matter how rare or common.

The annual count was begun in 1900 by the ornithologist Frank Chapman as a conservation-minded alternative to the Side Hunt, a Christmas tradition in which revelers competed to see who could shoot more birds and other animals. Now in its 113th year, the count is described by the Audubon Society as the longest-running citizen science project in the world.

Last year, more than 63,000 volunteers participated across North and South America, with more than 2,000 local counts, each covering a circular territory 15 miles in diameter. The vast trove of data ?helps scientists track continent-wide trends in bird populations; the Audubon Society lists more than 200 published studies that rely on information from the count.

My search for the rare sparrow was a part of the Bronx-Westchester Count, which covers an area centered on New Rochelle, N.Y.. Originating ?in 1924, this local count had a cumulative checklist of 224 species last year. The clay-colored sparrow was not one of them, and ?we were disappointed to think we wouldn?t be able to add it to the total.

But there were plenty of other birds around. We spotted a pileated woodpecker, a striking crow-size bird with a scarlet crest; a northern gannet, a long-winged bird of the open ocean that catches fish with a spectacular dive from the sky; a group of buffleheads, diminutive black-and-white ducks that seemed undaunted by the cold, swimming underwater to look for food and then surfacing a short distance away; a handful of red-breasted nuthatches, a northern bird that forages while clambering head-first down tree trunks and whose call sounds like a toy horn; and even an orange-crowned warbler, a tiny gray-and-yellow species that is also uncommon in the East.

And in the cause of science, we dutifully tallied the totals for dozens or hundreds of chickadees, herring gulls, Canada geese, starlings and other abundant locals.

And that was before lunch. After a break to eat and compare notes, the sparrow search recommenced, without great hope. But then, along a path bordering the field, I suddenly saw a blur of motion near the ground.

Got it! A few cellphone calls later, the other birders converged on the spot, and we all got a good look before the sparrow, which admittedly would not merit a second look from most non-birders, flew off down the field. Then, even with our main target spotted, we kept looking and counting. Every bird counts, after all.

In all, this year?s Bronx-Westchester Christmas Bird Count tallied 126 species, tying the highest total for this count circle. Three species were added for the first time, bringing the historical total ?to 227.

And of course, one of them was the clay-colored sparrow, recorded in two spots ? one in Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx, and ?my? bird at Marshlands.

Do you have a bird-count tale to share?

5 Love Lessons From Holiday Movies | YourTango

couple on couch watching holiday movie
What's your favorite holiday movie?

From Rudolph to The Nightmare Before Christmas, these movies are filled with love.

Cuddled up on the couch today watching holiday movies? Here's what you can learn about love from some of our favorite Christmas flicks.

More from YourTango: 7 Things We Learned About Dating In 2012

1. The most unexpected people might be the ones who pull through for you
Sure, Rudolph may have been about a reindeer and a sticky situation for Santa, but that doesn?t mean you can?t take a love lesson from it. Everyone thought Rudolph was a lost cause and no one wanted to give him a chance. However, the moment he was truly needed, he became a knight in shining (or glowing) armor and saved the day. Basically, don?t write someone off simply because they?re a little strange or different than anyone else you?ve dated ??he may wind up being the most steadfast rock in your life.

2. People can be redeemed with support
A Christmas Carol holds one of the most important lessons in both life and the holiday season: people do change, sometimes. While Scrooge seemed to be a truly miserable human being, when his negative actions and demeanor were shown to him? rather than simply being yelled ? he was able to evolve into a better human being. When it comes to serious relationship problems, you should attempt to explain to your partner the problems you have with him. Let him know that you want things to work out for the two of you. If he takes the necessary steps to grow and change for the better with your support, your relationship can be rescued.

3. Don?t take your current situation for granted (but do explore your options)
In The Nightmare Before Christmas, Jack Skellington is bored with his very prestigious role in Halloween Town, even with his devoted love interest Sally. When he falls down a rabbit hole of sorts and winds up exploring an entirely new land, he finds himself enthralled in a 'grass is greener' situation (though in this case, the snow is whiter). Eventually, after nearly destroying his relationships with everyone around him, he recognizes the importance of being happy with what you have. Don?t simply covet change because it?s 'new'. If you have somebody you love who loves you, try to work with what you have and create excitement that way. Keep reading ...

B2B Lead Generation: The Power of Content Marketing | Business 2 ...

Without a doubt, social media participation has taken off in the B2B world in 2012.? We have seen a surge in business blogging, infographics, and online videos.? Businesses are learning how to harness the power of social media platforms to promote their content for increased reach.? Companies are successfully attracting leads and increasing conversions via inbound methods. The increased success for B2B inbound marketing in general stems from the marked improvement in the relationships between buyers and sellers during the sales process.? The primary, and probably most important goal of the inbound process ? lead generation ? has certainly seen growth.? The main reason for increased lead generation via inbound methods is attributable to the power of content.

B2B Inbound Marketing: Effective Content Required

B2B marketing is traditionally seen as rigid and structured.? Indeed, many companies still strongly adhere to the strategy of generating leads via direct marketing methods such as cold calling, trade shows, and email blasts. In direct marketing, a company may share its content through printed materials.? Inbound marketing is changing the game for B2B marketers.? Rather than generating leads through the ?interruption? methods described above, inbound marketing seeks to attract potential leads via online techniques such as social media and SEO (search engine optimization).? Inbound marketing cannot happen effectively without online content, so a blog for your website is a top priority. The nature of your company?s content will vary depending on your products and solutions, so it is crucial to identify your target market and niche.

In B2B Marketing, Relevant, Engaging Content is Key

Creating your content won?t happen easily at first. You may worry about your writing skills or the depth of your knowledge, for example.? A good piece of advice is to keep your audience, or target market, in mind, and this will assist you in creating content.? It may not happen naturally at first, but the writing process really does get easier the more you do it.? It may also help to remember that people are drawn to your content because they like it, not because they are forced to view it.? In other words, create content that you personally would enjoy reading, and steer away from sounding pushy or sales-y.? Lead generation is more likely to occur when your content appeals to the reader on a personal level.? Which leads me to another important piece of advice ? be yourself and be genuine when creating content.? It?s true that you need to produce good content when lead generation is your goal.? Creating content that resonates with your potential leads is the key to attracting them to your website.

Effective B2B Inbound Marketing Has Passion and is Consistently Branded

Inbound B2B buyers are a progressively savvy group who know what they are looking for and how best to find it.? To achieve the full power of your content for lead generation, it is imperative for your blog posts to be completely connected with your brand and what you represent.? Potential leads and buyers want to know what you can do for them, and how you can do it better than your competition.? I recently heard Jack Krawczyk, the Head of Monetization for?StumbleUpon, speak in person at the?2012 Dallas Digital Summit.? This is one thing he said that really stuck with me:? ?People don?t buy what you do ? they buy why you do it?!? In other words, your leads want to know what you stand for and why you stand for it.? I find this to be an important reminder as I create content for my own blog, since this sentiment resonates quite strongly with B2B buyers.? When you have passion for your company and its products or solutions, it is obvious to your leads.? The power of your content is affirmed through passion, and is something potential leads will certainly notice.

In summary, it remains important to remember the mantra, ?content is king? when planning your B2B lead generation strategy.? The more attractive your content is to your target market ? because it has resonated with them on some level ? the more likely you are to see measurable increases in lead generation. Never underestimate the power of content.

What are you doing to take your content marketing to the next level?
