Good Samaritan, firefighters save dog, 16, trapped on icy pond ...

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Chloe's owners let the 16-year-old golden lab out Wednesday morning for what they thought would be a quick trip to relieve herself in their picturesque backyard overlooking a private pond.

She's old and not normally very adventuresome, her owners, George and Joni Sims told KCTV5.

Perhaps she chased a bird. Or a squirrel. Whatever, Chloe isn't barking out the truth.

But somehow she wound up on the icy Countryview Lake and broke through. She was surrounded by ice and trapped.

Beth Jacobi heard the dog's yelps about 10 a.m. Wednesday.

"I just heard this awful howling noise. And I thought it was like a cow or something back here dying or giving birth," Jacobi said.

She never imagined that it was a dog struggling to survive until about 20 minutes later she caught a glimpse of Chloe's head barely visible above the icy waters.

"I finally took a better look out there and I saw the dog in the water," she recalled. "I ran inside and grabbed my Dad and yelled, 'Dad, there's a dog in the lake!'"

John Applegate is a retired firefighter who heard Jacobi's cries for help. Applegate has rescued dogs from the pond before but it's been a bit. He grabbed his inner tube and they used it to try to paddle out to a fatigued Chloe.

But George Sims couldn't push through all the ice between himself and Chloe. Struggling but tiring, time was against Chloe.

"I was in tears. I was thinking what if it were my dog," Jacobi said.

Then KCK firefighters showed up and they provided the necessary equipment to ensure this story has a wagging tail ending.

They gave George Sims a pick axe. Balancing himself on the inner tube, he used the pick axe to break the ice as he shoved himself and the tube forward to his pooch.

"She was just trying to hang," one onlooker said. "She had a look of, 'Come on. Get me. Hurry!'"

George Sims yelled encouragement to his dog as he fought to get to her.

"Hang on Chloe! The charge is coming!" he exclaimed.

Once George Sims reached his dog, he grabbed her up by the scruff and yanked and jerked her against the tube and to the shore.

Exhausted and nearly frozen, a shivering Chloe couldn't stand. Bystanders rushed to shroud her with blankets and towels.

The Sims then took a grateful Chloe inside where they plopped her in front of a space heater to get warm beside her sister, Cocoa, a cocker spaniel. Chloe is expected to make a full recovery.

When KCTV5's Nima Shaffe went by the home, Chloe was at the door trying to nudge her way out with her nose.

Her owners were reticent to talk about the ordeal, but emphasized that they are grateful to all who helped this "ruff" story have a happy ending.

"I didn't think she'd make it. She's 16 years old," Jacobi said. "She's an old dog. She was out there for about an hour."

Countryview Lake is near North 109th Street and Countryside Drive.

Aguero scores, comes off in Man City's easy win

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:34 p.m. ET Jan. 1, 2013

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Argentina striker Sergio Aguero endured a bittersweet first match of 2013 for Manchester City, rounding off the scoring in a routine 3-0 win over Stoke before giving the champions a scare by going off with a hamstring injury.

Aguero converted a 74th-minute penalty, adding to goals by compatriot Pablo Zabaleta and fellow forward Edin Dzeko, to ensure Stoke's 10-match unbeaten run in the Premier League came to a crushing end at the Etihad Stadium.

However, City's joint-top scorer, with 10 goals in all competitions, was forced off three minutes later - clutching his right hamstring - after pulling up sharply as he embarked on a dribble. According to City assistant manager David Platt, it is likely to keep him out of Saturday's FA Cup third-round match against Watford and probably the Premier League game against Arsenal on Jan. 13.

"It's a blow but unfortunately, when you have got so many games in a short space of time, you are running the risk with everybody," Platt said.

"But there are different degrees of hamstring injuries - that's why we need 48 hours."

That was the only negative on City's day as Roberto Mancini's second-place team stayed seven points behind Manchester United in the title race.

"I've got no complaints they were the better team," Stoke manager Tony Pulis said. "Someone has just asked me what the difference was and I said about 220 million pounds.

"For us to come here and get anything we have to bring our `A' game and City have to be off it, and that wasn't the case today."

Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic worked wonders to keep Stoke in the game before Zabaleta's goal, coming out on top in his private duel with Aguero.

The striker was presented with four gilt-edged chances in the opening 33 minutes, but was denied three times by brilliant Begovic saves while also firing over.

It was left to Aguero's compatriot to calm the nerves of an increasingly frustrated City faithful, Zabaleta finding himself in the perfect position to slot home from seven yards after Begovic intercepted James Milner's cross from the right.

Thereafter, it was a matter of when, rather than if, City would add to its lead and the second goal arrived through Dzeko, tapping into an empty net following Begovic's latest save from Aguero.

With an eighth home win in 11 matches secure, City became more slack and Stoke threatened from a couple set pieces but the home defense - containing the recalled Joleon Lescott - held firm.

And Aguero finally got the goal his all-round performance deserved when he converted a penalty after David Silva was fouled by Steven Nzonzi, although contact appeared to be made just outside the area. However, that was Aguero's last meaningful contribution as he limped off soon after.

Glenn Whelan had a shot tipped onto the post by goalkeeper Joe Hart late on as City kept a clean sheet.

Panetta allows general to retire as 3-star

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Pentagon says Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has permitted a three-star Army general accused of bullying subordinates to retire without a demotion in rank.

A Pentagon spokesman, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Nate Christensen, says Lt. Gen. Patrick O'Reilly was placed on the retirement rolls Tuesday.

A Pentagon inspector general's investigation last year found that O'Reilly regularly yelled and screamed at subordinates, often in public, demeaned and belittled employees and behaved in such a way as to result in the departure of at least six senior staffers from the Missile Defense Agency during his time as its director.

Panetta determined that O'Reilly had met the basic standard for being allowed to retire without a loss in rank, which is that he "served satisfactorily" as a three-star.

Square Island: 2012: Year of Speaking

Happy New Year! 2012 has been wonderful to me. I started out with the goal of becoming a public speaker, with the specific goal of 5 lightning talks and 3 full-length lectures. While I came short on the lightning talks (4 instead of 5), I went way beyond on the lectures (13 instead of 3), speaking at far away places like London, Bucharest and Antwerp. You can see all my talks at my speaking profile. (Yup, I have a speaker profile!)

Besides giving talks, I also wrote a few blog posts on speaking:

All in all, I consider it mission accomplished!

New Resolution?

I really enjoy public speaking, and will continue to do so in 2013 and beyond. I wanted to set a new goal for the new year, but I couldn't come up with a crisp one like last year. Here are a few of my candidates:

  1. Mentor others to speak at tech conferences
  2. Give a keynote speech
  3. Write a book

Mentoring

Mentoring others is a great goal, but I have difficulty coming up with a measurable result. Initially I thought, "put 3 people on stage", but I suspect I won't be the sole reason someone is speaking, so it is really hard to quantify.

Keynote

Keynote speech is an interesting goal. Keynotes open conferences, address to a large crowd with a diverse background, and have everybody take home a learning or two. It is quite a daunting task. My aspiration would be to give a keynote speech that is deeply rooted in my technical knowledge, but unveil general life lessons. I have no idea how I would write a speech like that, and even if I do, keynotes don't have open call for speakers, so I have no idea how I would be invited to deliver one. The lack of a game plan makes me uneasy, but perhaps that's the kind of goal I should shoot for?

Book

For the book, I'd like to write an advanced Android book that expands on my various talks. The main holdback for this goal is the time. I have spoken to many tech book authors, and all of them told me it is a lot of work. More work than you think, and then some more. I have so many projects going on that I am not sure if I should take on such a big goal.

No Resolution

In the end I decided I won't have a new year resolution. I will still mentor others to speak, think about my pie-in-the-sky keynote, and test the writing waters with a chapter or two. But I won't have a resolution with a font-size: 1.8em measurable result like last time ^_^

Kelly a top NFL target again

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) ? One of the first questions Oregon coach Chip Kelly was asked after arriving in Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl was about the possibility of coaching in the NFL.

The are-you-going-to-the-NFL questions haven't let up in the five days since and only figure to pick up after seven coaches were fired Monday.

Deflection has been Kelly's defense since the rumors started and it was no different after all those NFL openings cropped up.

"I've got a game to play," Kelly said during the Fiesta Bowl's media day on Monday. "We're playing in the Fiesta Bowl. That's the biggest thing in my life. If I allowed other things to get into my life, then they would be distractions, but there aren't. Our focus 100 percent is on the Fiesta Bowl."

Kelly has been an intriguing candidate for NFL teams for a few years.

The 49-year-old coach is known as an offensive innovator and his fast-paced, high-scoring offense has led to the most successful stretch in Oregon's history.

The fifth-ranked Ducks have gone to four straight BCS bowl games, a run that includes a trip to the 2011 national championship game, Oregon's first Rose Bowl win in 95 years last season and Thursday night's Fiesta Bowl against No. 5 Kansas State at University of Phoenix Stadium.

The speculation over the past few years has been that Kelly has his eye on an NFL job and he even talked to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year before saying he had unfinished business in Eugene.

The rumors began to pick up this season and followed him to the desert, where he's been asked about the NFL every day he's been here and has given a different version of the same answer every time.

"My heart is to win today and that's it," Kelly said. "I know everybody wants to hear a different answer. And I know that at times when I don't give you guys the answer that you guys want, then I'm being evasive. I'm not being evasive."

One reason that Kelly's stock is so high is that NFL teams are starting to embrace the hurry-all-the-time offense he has nearly perfected in Eugene.

In college, coaches have latched onto the no-huddle offense, with teams across the country employing a version of it.

NFL teams have always seemed to be reluctant to borrow from the college ranks, sticking to smash-mouth football for years even while college offenses had unprecedented success with the spread.

The mindset has changed, at least some, over the past few years as teams have looked for ways to get ahead of the defenses. Several NFL teams have gone the high-octane route on offense, including New England, Seattle, Washington and Green Bay, to a certain extent.

Kelly has been the standard-bearer for the redline approach in college. His Ducks have ranked no lower than sixth in the country in rushing yards since he became offensive coordinator in 2007 and have been in the top 10 in scoring and total offense every year but one.

With success like that, it's no wonder he's become a popular target for NFL teams.

"My whole thing since I've been here is that I'm going to do the best job I can every single day," Kelly said. "If that's good enough that other people look at me sometimes, I don't really care about that. I think too many people live in the future. We live in the moment."

The key this week will be keeping the Ducks in the moment as the rumors swirl.

Kelly is reported to be the top candidate to replace Pat Shurmur with the Cleveland Browns and would be a popular choice for the Philadelphia Eagles now that Andy Reid is gone. Arizona, Buffalo, Chicago, San Diego and Kansas City also are without coaches and could come calling on Kelly as well.

Whatever Kelly does behind the scenes, he's tried to make sure it doesn't become a distraction for his team as it prepares to play another team that had national-championship hopes that lasted deep into the season.

"I never said a word to our guys about it," Kelly said. "They understand what the task is at hand. I don't think about it. They don't think about it, so ..."

So far, it seems to be working.

Kelly's players have taken to his stick-to-what's-in-front-of-you mentality when it comes to games and have done the same thing with the rumors about their coach possibly leaving.

"It's not really distracting," Oregon running back DeAnthony Thomas said. "Our main focus is just winning this game right now and just celebrating as a team."

Celebrating or lamenting, Kelly likely will face a decision not long after it's over.

'The Hobbit' stays atop box office for third week

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" continues to rule them all at the box office, staying on top for a third-straight week and capping a record-setting $10.8 billion year in moviegoing.

The Warner Bros. fantasy epic from director Peter Jackson, based on the beloved J.R.R. Tolkien novel, made nearly $33 million this weekend, according to Sunday studio estimates, despite serious competition from some much-anticipated newcomers. It's now made a whopping $686.7 million worldwide and $222.7 million domestically alone.

Two big holiday movies ? and potential Academy Awards contenders ? also had strong openings. Quentin Tarantino's spaghetti Western-blaxploitation mash-up "Django Unchained" came in second place for the weekend with $30.7 million. The Weinstein Co. revenge comedy, starring Jamie Foxx as a slave in the Civil War South and Christoph Waltz as the bounty hunter who frees him and then makes him his partner, has earned $64 million since its Christmas Day opening.

And in third place with $28 million was the sweeping, all-singing "Les Miserables," based on the international musical sensation and the Victor Hugo novel of strife and uprising in 19th century France. The Universal Pictures film, with a cast of A-list actors singing live on camera led by Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe has made $67.5 million domestically and $116.2 worldwide since debuting on Christmas.

Additionally, the smash-hit James Bond adventure "Skyfall" has now made $1 billion internationally to become the most successful film yet in the 50-year franchise, Sony Pictures announced Sunday. The film stars Daniel Craig for the third time as the iconic British superspy.

"This is a great final weekend of the year," said Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "How perfect to end this year on such a strong note with the top five films performing incredibly well."

The week's other new wide release, the Billy Crystal-Bette Midler comedy "Parental Guidance" from 20th Century Fox, made $14.8 million over the weekend for fourth place and $29.6 million total since opening on Christmas.

Dergarabedian described the holding power of "The Hobbit" in its third week as "just amazing." Jackson shot the film, the first of three prequels to his massively successful "Lord of the Rings" series, in 48 frames per second ? double the normal frame rate ? for a crisper, more detailed image. It's also available in the usual 24 frames per second and both 2-D and 3-D projections.

"I think people are catching up with the movie. Maybe they're seeing it in multiple formats," he said. "I think it's just a big epic that feels like a great way to end the moviegoing year. There's momentum there with this movie."

"Django Unchained" is just as much of an epic in its own stylishly violent way that's quintessentially Tarantino. Erik Lomis, The Weinstein Co.'s president of theatrical distribution, said the opening exceeded the studio's expectations.

"We're thrilled with it, clearly. We knew it was extremely competitive at Christmas, particularly when you look at the start 'Les Miz' got. We were sort of resigned to being behind them. The fact that we were able to overtake them over the weekend was just great," Lomis said. "Taking nothing away from their number, it's a tribute to the playability of 'Django.'"

"Les Miserables" went into its opening weekend with nearly $40 million in North American grosses, including $18.2 on Christmas Day. That's the second-best opening ever on the holiday following "Sherlock Holmes," which made $24.9 million on Christmas 2009. Tom Hooper, in a follow-up to his Oscar-winner "The King's Speech," directs an enormous, ambitious take on the beloved musical which has earned a CinemaScore of "A'' from audiences and "A-plus" from women.

Nikki Rocco, Universal's head of distribution, said the debut for "Les Miserables" also beat the studio's expectations.

"That $18.2 million Christmas Day opening ? people were shocked ... This is a musical!" she said. "Once people see it, they talk about how fabulous it is."

It all adds up to a record-setting year at the movies, beating the previous annual record of $10.6 billion set in 2009. Dergarabedian pointed out that the hits came scattered throughout the year, not just during the summer blockbuster season or prestige-picture time at the end. "Contraband," ''Safe House" and "The Vow" all performed well early on, but then when the big movies came, they were huge. "The Avengers" had the biggest opening ever with $207.4 million in May. The raunchy comedy "Ted" and comic-book behemoth "The Dark Knight Rises" both found enormous audiences. And Paul Thomas Anderson's challenging drama "The Master" shattered records in September when it opened on five screens in New York and Los Angeles with $736,311, for a staggering per-screen average of $147,262.

"We were able to get this record without scratching and clawing to a record," he said.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
