People are lining up for Wii U launch in London

The European Wii U launch is just a few days away, and some have lined up for a midnight launch event in London.

Wii U londonThe Wii U launches in Europe on November 30, just a few days from now. And as expected, the first few people are already in line. A group of Nintendo fans have queued up in London to be one of the first ones to get the new Wii U console.

And it?s a good idea to get in line: Nintendo has said that Wii U supplies in the UK will be limited, and some have estimated that only about 25,000 Wii U consoles will be available on launch day. Several UK retailers have recently said that they could not guarantee Wii U pre-orders.

UK retailer HMV is holding a midnight launch event in London, where the first 100 people will receive a free copy of New Super Mario Bros U and a Wii U goodie bag. But besides the first 100, it?s unclear how many consoles are in stock for those looking to buy one on launch day.

The Wii U sold 400,000 units in North America during its first week on the market. It would have sold more, but inventory was severely limited. The new console launches in Europe on November 30 and in Japan on December 7.

'Two and a Half Men' actor apologizes

NEW YORK (AP) ? Teenage actor Angus T. Jones of the comedy "Two and a Half Men" apologized Tuesday for a series of interviews denouncing his own show, an episode that has rivaled former colleague Charlie Sheen's meltdown as an off-screen oddity.

Speaking to religious media outlets, the 19-year-old Jones has called the CBS comedy "filth" and "very inappropriate" and talked about how his religious awakening has affected his attitude toward life and work.

"Two and a Half Men," television's third most popular comedy, remains heavy on sexual innuendo even with Ashton Kutcher replacing bad-boy Sheen following his firing for drug use and a subsequent public meltdown. Jones, who started on the show when he was 10, plays Jake Harper, son of the uptight character portrayed by Emmy winner Jon Cryer.

In a statement issued late Tuesday, Jones said he had the highest regard for all of the people he has worked with on the comedy, including creator Chuck Lorre and Warner Bros. studio chief Peter Roth.

"I apologize if my remarks reflect me showing indifference to and disrespect of my colleagues and a lack of appreciation of the extraordinary opportunity of which I have been blessed," said Jones, who reportedly makes $350,000 an episode. "I never intended that."

Jones wasn't at the studio lot for a rehearsal on Tuesday. He's not scheduled to appear on the two episodes that are being filmed before the end of the year, said a person close to the show who spoke on condition of anonymity because Warner Bros. and CBS haven't commented publicly on Jones. His character has recently joined the Army and his airtime has been cut down.

His real-life adventure came to light on Monday, when he said in a video posted by the Forerunner Chronicles in Seale, Ala., featured him talking about not wanting to be on "Two and a Half Men" anymore.

"Please stop watching it," Jones said. "Please stop filling your head with filth."

In a radio broadcast, "The Voice of Prophecy," recorded for the Seventh-day Adventist Church on Jones' birthday in October, Jones described his religious path. He has been attending a Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Los Angeles area.

Jones said he felt drawn to God after a tough time in his life when his parents were going through a divorce and he experimented with drugs.

"I never drank," he said. "That was one thing God protected me from, and I'm still a virgin. God protected me from those things."

Jones said that "it's very weird that I'm on a television show, especially now that I am trying to walk with God. My television show has nothing to do with God and doesn't want anything to do with God." Still, he said he had no plans to get out of his contract.

In another interview posted on Tuesday with Christianity Today, Jones described himself as a "paid hypocrite."

"Even though it's my job to be an actor, I have given my life to God," he said. "I am very comfortable and firm in that, but I still have to be on this show. It's the No. 1 comedy, but it's very inappropriate and the themes are very inappropriate. I have to be this person I am not."

"Two and a Half Men," which has seen its ratings tumble this fall with a move to Thursdays, is now behind "The Big Bang Theory" and "Modern Family" in the comedy ratings.

Writing: Art, Craft, or Entertainment? | ericjohnbaker

Now, come on. It?s an Aston Martin. That?s art.

I?m going to offer a broad definition of art, and then dismantle it: Art is the manipulation of sound, image, words, or objects for the purpose of human expression.

In this context, even the non-functional elements of automobile design, such as the contours of a?sports car, are art, while the purely functional parts ? hoses and sparkplugs, for example ? are not. A chimpanzee throwing paint at a canvas is not art, it is play, because (so far as we know) expression through object manipulation is beyond the scope of a chimpanzee?s understanding or intent.

But what about human intent? My definition starts to break down when we examine art from a perspective of intent.

Companies hire graphic artists to design packaging. The artist who designs a box of Lucky Charms intends for the result to be eye-catching and aesthetically pleasing to shoppers. She manipulates colors, shapes, and figures to create that box, using specialized knowledge of art techniques. But, in the end, it?s still a box of breakfast cereal. I?d say she?s a craftsperson, not an artist, at least when she?s getting a pay check from General Mills.

On the other hand, Michelangelo Buonarroti is rightfully considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest, artists of all time. He painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling, of course, in addition to sculpting the David and designing the dome for St. Peter?s in Rome.

Yeah, on commission.

The world would not have any of those priceless treasures if 16th century popes and wealthy merchants didn?t have all kinds of florins to burn (melt?).? Sure, they were Michelangelo?s designs (duh), but he didn?t have carte blanche when it came to subject matter. It wasn?t until the era of modern art that artists routinely manipulated objects for the sake of art itself.

That?s right, Michelangelo was merely a craftsman on par with the cereal box designers of today. If you think I actually believe that, you may skip to the comments section now and begin your irrational ranting?

If only they had some lucky stars and green clovers.

Now that we have those weirdoes out of the way, I admit that I said what I said about Mr. Buonarotti to make a point. It?s hard to define art unless it?s your art and you are doing the defining.

So do you view your writing as art, craft, or entertainment? I suspect most of us would view taking a freelance assignment or writing in a corporate setting to be craft, since we aren?t choosing the subject matter and must conform to strict word counts and style guidelines determined by others. There is nothing wrong with being a craftsperson.

How about fiction, poetry, essay, and personal non-fiction, though? Or blogging, for that matter?

I view what I do as entertainment. To entertain well, I must employ some degree of refined craftsmanship, so an element of craft is present. But not art. In my entire writing life, I have yet to create a piece of art.

When working on a fiction project, I love coming up with a poetic flourish or a clever construction. But as an entertainer, not as an artist. I want people who read my stories and this blog, above all else, to be entertained. That?s my intent.

I?ve never, for one moment, worked on a story that I intended to keep to myself. I?m writing to get published, so other people can laugh, be scared, cry, feel disturbed, or experience some other emotion from reading the words I?ve manipulated. Most of the time, when I get to the end of the first draft, I deem it to be garbage and discard it as a failure. Sometimes, I think it?s good, revise it, and send it out. Then, if I start getting rejections, I deem it a failure. That story simple isn?t good enough to entertain. Whether it means something personal to me is irrelevant.

So what about you? Are you an artist, a craftsperson, or an entertainer? In your answer, feel free to tell me my assessment is all wrong and come up with your own. I won?t mind. Entertainers need to have a thick skin.

US-Russian Crew Picked for One-Year Space Station Flight

A veteran NASA space commander and Russian cosmonaut have signed on for the ultimate space voyage: a yearlong trip on the International Space Station.

American astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko will launch on the one-year space station flight in spring 2015 and return to Earth in spring 2016, NASA officials announced today (Nov. 26). They will begin their mission training in early 2013.

The mission will help NASA understand how the human body adapts to extremely long space missions, such as voyages around the moon, to an asteroid and ultimately to Mars, NASA officials said.

"Congratulations to Scott and Mikhail on their selection for this important mission," William Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator for Human Exploration and Operations in Washington, said in a statement. "Their skills and previous experience aboard the space station align with the mission's requirements. The one-year increment will expand the bounds of how we live and work in space and will increase our knowledge regarding the effects of microgravity on humans as we prepare for future missions beyond low-Earth orbit." [Most Extreme Human Spaceflight Records]?

NASA is developing spacecraft and mission plans to send astronauts to visit a near-Earth asteroid by 2025, a goal set by President Barack Obama. The space agency is also reportedly studying potential manned missions back to the moon.

Kelly, 48, is a U.S. Navy captain who has flown on two space shuttle missions and one long-duration expedition on the International Space Station. He commanded the space station's Expedition 26 mission in 2010 during his third spaceflight.

Kelly hails from West Orange, N.J., and joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1996. His identical twin brother Mark Kelly also served as a Navy captain and NASA astronaut before retiring from the military and spaceflight in 2011.

Kornienko, 52, is also a veteran spaceflyer. The native of Syzran in Russia's Kuibyshev region is a former paratrooper officer who joined Russia's cosmonaut corps in 1998. Kornienko spent more than 176 days in space as a flight engineer on the station's Expedition 23 and 24 crews.

NASA and Russia announced plans for the one-year space station voyage earlier this year. Rumors of the flight were circling prior to the announcement, with the Russian news agency Interfax suggesting that veteran NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson ?a veteran station commander ?as a potential choice for the American crewmember. Whitson stepped down from her position as NASA's Chief Astronaut earlier this year to rejoin the agency's active spaceflying ranks.

Today's announcement, however, puts that theory to rest.

"Selection of the candidate for the one year mission was thorough and difficult due to the number of suitable candidates from the Cosmonaut? corps," Vladimir Popovkin, the head of Russian Federal Space Agency, said in a statement. "We have chosen the most responsible, skilled and enthusiastic crew members to expand space exploration, and we have full confidence in them."

The 2015 space station flight by Kelly and Kornienko will be the longest mission to the International Space Station, but not the longest continuous spaceflight. That record is held by cosmonaut Valery Polyakov, who lived aboard Russia's Mir space station from January 1994 until March 1995, ultimately spending 438 consecutive days in orbit.

The International Space Station is the product of cooperation by NASA, Russia and the space agencies of Europe, Japan and Canada. Construction of the $100 billion space station began in 1998 with the first crew taking up residence in 2000. Astronauts and cosmonauts have lived on the space station in rotating crews ever since.

Gastric bypass surgery helps diabetes but doesn't cure it, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? After gastric bypass surgery, diabetes goes away for some people -- often even before they lose much weight. So does that mean gastric surgery "cures" diabetes? Not necessarily, according to the largest community-based study of long-term diabetes outcomes after bariatric surgery. For most people in the study, e-published in advance of print in Obesity Surgery, diabetes either never remitted after gastric surgery or relapsed within five years.

Among the two thirds of the study's patients whose diabetes at first went away, more than a third re-developed diabetes again within five years after gastric surgery. After adding in the one quarter of patients whose diabetes never remitted after surgery, most (56 percent) of the study's patients had no long-lasting remission of their diabetes following gastric surgery. However, when diabetes did go away, the research team extrapolated, it stayed away for a median of eight years.

Which kinds of obese people with type 2 diabetes are likely to get the most benefit from gastric surgery? "Our results suggest that, after gastric surgery, diabetes stays away for longer in those people whose diabetes was less severe and at an earlier stage at the time of surgery," said principal investigator David E. Arterburn, MD, MPH, a general internist and associate investigator at Group Health Research Institute. "Gastric surgery isn't for everyone," he said. "But this evidence suggests that, once you have diabetes and are severely obese, you should strongly consider it, even though it doesn't seem to be a cure for most patients."

The multi-site study tracked 4,434 adults at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Kaiser Permanente Southern California, and HealthPartners for 14 years: from 1995 to 2008. The research arms of all three of these integrated health care delivery systems -- and Group Health Research Institute, where the study's results were analyzed -- belong to the HMO Research Network. The patients had type 2 diabetes that was either controlled with medication or else uncontrolled, and they were also obese enough to be candidates for gastric bypass surgery.

"Diabetes is an increasingly common disease that tends to keep getting worse relentlessly," Dr. Arterburn said. More than 25 million American adults have diabetes -- and as populations age and keep gaining weight, 50 million are predicted to have it by 2050. Already, diabetes accounts for 5 percent of all U.S. health care spending. And it raises the risk of blindness, kidney disease, heart attacks, strokes, and deaths.

"Prevention is by far the best medicine for diabetes," Dr. Arterburn said. "Once you have diabetes, it's really hard to get rid of. Attempts to treat it with intensive lifestyle changes and medical management have been disappointing." For instance, the National Institutes of Health recently halted the Look AHEAD study of intensive lifestyle changes for people with diabetes. Despite improvements in risk factors like body weight, fitness, and blood pressure, sugar, and lipids, that study showed lifestyle changes did not lower the outcomes that matter most: heart attacks, strokes, and deaths.

"No wonder so many were excited to learn that diabetes can remit after gastric surgery -- even, in some cases, before any significant weight loss -- and many were hoping that gastric surgery might be a 'cure' for diabetes," Dr. Arterburn said. "Our study is the first major evidence that diabetes often recurs after gastric bypass surgery." Still, he added, even after diabetes comes back, having had a long period of post-surgery remission is likely to have many positive effects, such as fewer complications of diabetes: less damage to eyes and kidneys, and fewer heart attacks, strokes, and deaths. The researchers are now funded by the National Institutes of Health to study that possibility in this same population. Dr. Arterburn is also leading a randomized controlled pilot trial of intensive behavioral treatment vs. gastric surgery at Group Health with colleagues from the University of Washington.

It's still not clear whether diabetes relapse happens because of gaining weight back or because of underlying the progression of diabetes. But patients' weight -- before and after surgery -- was not strongly correlated with remission or relapse of diabetes in this population.

As part of the Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions about Effectiveness (DEcIDE) program, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services funded this project under contract HHSA290-2005-0033-I-TO10-WA1, led by Dr. Arterburn.

Using War As Cover To Target Journalists

The setting at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel on Tuesday represented the height of refinement, but Alan Rusbridger, editor in chief of The Guardian, reminded the black-tie crowd at the annual dinner for the Committee to Protect Journalists of something it knew all too well: in many parts of the globe, its profession is under murderous assault.

Your Credit Card Debt Relief Options

StickFigureCheeringMaze Your Credit Card Debt Relief OptionsUnfortunately, credit card debt is a reality for several consumers. The simple fact is, so many people have been affected by the financial recession that we recently faced. However, with the economy slowly starting to get better, more and more people are ready to start working on their debts. But, overwhelming payments can tarnish the great efforts that people make. With that said, you may be looking for the best credit card debt relief option for you.

Because anyone who is facing overwhelming credit card debt has their own unique financial position, it?s impossible for me to give a one size fits all debt relief option. The reality is, you and your personal credit card debt consultant should make that decision together. However, here are the three most popular debt relief options:

Option #1: Credit Card Debt Consolidation

Credit card debt consolidation is one of the most popular option that consumers choose when it comes to dealing with their credit card debt. However, that doesn?t mean that this is YOUR best option. There are 3 different types of credit card debt consolidation, here?s how they work:

  • Consolidation By Service Provider: The first option that you will generally come across is consolidation by service provider. This is when you hire a consolidation company to manage and consolidate your debts. In most cases, these companies have pre-negotiated interest rates with most of the major lenders. They generally reduce your interest rates and help you to structure an accelerated payment plan.
  • Consolidation By Balance Transfer Credit Card: Another consolidation option that you will come across is called consolidation by balance transfer credit cards. In this option, consumers with excellent credit use balance transfer credit cards to consolidate multiple credit card accounts into one, easy to manage account. The good news is that most of these types of offers come with 0% promotional interest rates as well as incredibly competitive long term interest rates.
  • Consolidation By HELOC: Many consumers have made the decision to open HELOCs(Home Equity Lines Of Credit) in an attempt to consolidate credit card debts with long term low interest rates. Generally, I advise against this process. However, in some, very rare cases, this just may be the best option.

Option #2: Credit Card Debt Settlement

Another very popular option for debt relief is credit card debt settlement. Designed for the consumers who have fallen behind on payments to the point of no return, credit card debt consolidation has helped several consumers to avoid bankruptcy! This is a savings and negotiations process that works like this:

  • Starting A Savings Account: Most credit card debt consultants will advise using what is called a SPA(Special Purpose Account) to start saving for your settlements. Simply start saving as much as you can each month.
  • Negotiations: Once you have enough money saved for the settlement, it?s time to call and negotiate with the lender for a settlement amount. This is a very in depth process. I generally advise the help of a credit card debt specialist for this process.
  • Pay The Settled Amount: Finally, pay the agreed upon settlement amount in the time allotted to you and you will be done.

Credit card debt settlement can cause incredible damage to credit scores. Also, if it takes too long to save for your settlement, you can be sued by the lender. Always work with a professional when attempting to settle credit card debts!

Option #3: Credit Card Hardship Programs

Credit card hardship programs are gaining in popularity however are not yet as popular as the above 2 options. I feel this is as a result of the lack of advertising because, in most cases, credit card hardship programs are the best option to get out of credit card debt. Here?s how they work:

  • Your Accounts Are Closed: To avoid the possibility in increasing your debts as you make an attempt to pay them off, most lenders will close your credit card account once you are approved for and enrolled in a hardship program.
  • Your Interest Rate Is Reduced: To help you afford the payments on your credit card, most lenders will reduce your interest rate. This will ultimately reduce the total amount of money it will take to pay off the debt and allow for reductions in payments.
  • You Receive Constant Payment Plan: Finally, instead of charging you payments as a reflection of your balance, the lender will create a constant payment plan for you. These plans are much like the payment plans on secured debts. Your payments will be the same each month and, in most cases, will be designed to help you pay off your entire balance within 60 months or less.

UK debt management welcomes Barclays PPI announcement

The news this month (Nov 2012) that Barclays bank has set aside an extra ?700m to cover claims for mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI) has been welcomed by a leading UK debt management company.

The new money is in addition to the ?1bn set aside in 2011 and the ?300m in the first three months of 2012. The extra money was required due to Barclays? having received ?more claims than it had expected.?

Mr Kevin Fielder, of UK debt management company UK Money Solutions said this week ?We welcome this announcement from Barclays Bank. It is a further recognition of the scale of the mis-selling that took place and we hope it will speed up the claims process for those who have been victims of this scandal.?

PPI was supposed to protect customers who lost their jobs or became ill while repaying loans, but was widely mis-sold to those who did not want or need it. The extra money takes Barclays' provisions for PPI mis-selling to ?2bn and takes the total amount set aside across the industry to more than ?10bn. It makes Barclays has made the second biggest provision, behind Lloyds Banking Group, which has set aside ?4.275bn.

Mr Fielder added ?The Financial Ombudsman Service, has already reported of a big increase in the number of complaints, with 1500 new cases arriving daily. The lack of response to these claims is fast becoming another scandal. The banks sometimes forget that some of those with the greatest amount of debt are in that position due to the amount of PPI added to previous loans and debt consolidation. Today, they are again at the mercy of the banks; they are awaiting speedy settlement of claims so they can start to move to a debt free future.?

Formed in 2005, debt management company UK Money Solutions have become a leading UK debt management company offering planning and debt consolidation services. They are recognised pioneers within the sector. A large amount of their work involves handling claims for mis-sold PPI on behalf of their clients.

The unrest underscored the struggle over the direction of Egypt's turbulent passage nearly two years after a popular uprising toppled Hosni Mubarak's authoritarian regime. Newly appointed Egyptian prosecutor general, Talaat Abdullah, arrives for work on his first day in office after being appointed by President Mohammed Morsi in sweeping edicts announced Thursday temporarily giving Morsi near-absolute power over the executive, judicial and legislative branches of government, in Cairo, Egypt, Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012. Morsi fired the controversial former prosecutor general and created "revolutionary" judicial bodies to put Mubarak and some of his top aides on trial a second time for the killings of protesters playing to widespread discontent with the judiciary. (AP) ? Leading democracy advocate Mohammed ElBaradei says dialogue with Egypt's Islamist president is not possible until he rescinds his decrees giving himself near absolute powers.

Speaking to a handful of journalists, including The Associated Press, ElBaradei says he is hoping for a "smooth transition without plunging the country into a cycle of violence."

But he says that may not be possible unless President Mohammed Morsi rescinds the decrees.

ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace laureate for his past work as the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, has formed a "National Salvation Front" with other liberal and secular leaders, trying to unify the opposition against Morsi.

In the decrees issued this week, Morsi put himself above judicial scrunity.

Big South Fork Natl Recreation Area makes IMBA Epic Status ...

Long recognized as one of the South's premiere destinations for canoeing, hiking and horseback riding, the Big South Fork National River and Recreation just landed on the national radar screen as a great place to mountain bike. The International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) recently named five trails in the Big South Fork as Epic Rides. This makes the Big South Fork the first national park unit in the U.S. to receive the elite designation.

The announcement was made at IMBA's World Summit held recently in Santa Fe, N.M. Joe Cross, president of the Big South Fork Mountain Bike Club, was there to receive the honor on behalf of the club and the National Park Service.

Cross said the IMBA recognition will greatly enhance the Big South Fork's reputation among mountain bikers both in the U.S and abroad.

"The Epic designation will draw hundreds of new users to the Big South Fork, many of whom use the IMBA designation as a bucket list of must-ride trails" Cross said.

Other Epic Rides named this year include the Warner Lake region in South Chilcotin, British Columbia, Canada; and the Bernina Express, in Graubunden, Switzerland.

The five Epic Ride mountain bike trails in the Big South Fork are Collier Ridge (approximately 5.5 miles of single-track); West Bandy (3 miles of single-track); Duncan Hollow (2.3 miles of single-track); Grand Gap Loop (6.4 miles, with a few technical sections); and the portion of the John Muir Trail from Grand Gap Loop to Station Camp (7.5 miles, mostly flat and smooth).

Bird-Sitting Richie | vet-n-pet DIRECT News, Pet Related Articles ...

This week we have been bird-sitting my brother?s beautiful bird ?Richie?.?
Richie is an Alexandrine Parrot and he is about 12 months old.? My brother adores his bird and he was going away for a week and decided it would be best if I looked after him.? My girls , husband and I were more than happy to oblige as I love birds and actually would love to get a cockatoo one day.

Alexandrine Parrots are medium sized birds and are known to be friendly, intelligent and talkative, which is why my brother chose to get one.? We are still unsure if Richie is in fact a boy or not, as the way to tell is that the males develop a beautiful red and black ring around their necks as they get older and the females don?t.? This ring can take up to the age of three to develop, so Richie is still too young to be sure.?? He is a beautiful colour with varying shades of blue and green with red patches on his wings and a striking orange red beak.

Richie is a great pet and seems to have adjusted to our household very well.? We were a little bit concerned on how Lilly, our dog, would react to him but she has pretty much ignored him, unless he dropped food then she would go and eat it up.? Richie is very noisy and always seems to be squawking, whistling or (almost) saying hello.? He is also very messy, constantly tipping his water over and flooding his cage or having a bath in it.? There is a non stop mess around his cage consisting of seed, fruit, feathers and of course poo.? He is also pretty destructive, with his very strong beak and claws he manages to chew everything.

When at home Richie is very spoilt by my brother and he spends a lot of time out of his cage, with free run of the house.? He even has two cages, an outdoor one where he spends his days on the deck and an indoor cage for nighttime and bad weather.? Both cages are huge and filled with a variety of toys to keep him amused.? Richie also loves his food.? It seems that he wants to eat everything he sees you eating.? He has a constant supply of mixed seed, with nuts and fruit in it, but his favourite thing is the Vetafarm Parrot Deli Treats.? He just goes crazy when he sees you get the box out to get him some.? Richie also has a good mixture of fresh fruit and vegetables daily including apples, carrots, corn and cucumber. When my brother dropped him off I was given a lecture on what human foods were safe for him to eat and decided it was best to check it out to be sure.? I found this website http://www.animalloverspetshop.com/BirdCare.html it has links for lists on what is safe to feed your bird and other bird care tips.

I asked my brother if he has ever wormed Richie and he said no, he didn?t realise he needed to.? This is commonly overlooked by bird owners, but like all pets they do require worming.?? I bought my brother some Avitrol Plus Worming Syrup to worm Richie with once he goes home and is less likely to be stressed.? There are also many vitamin and mineral supplements available for birds that may be lacking something or perhaps are unwell or during molting.? Overall Richie seems to be in good health and is a very happy bird.

Birds make good pets and can be very interactive and affectionate and are possibly a little bit less work than a cat or dog but they do still require a lot of care.? Birds, like Richie, that are tame and interact a lot with people require a lot more attention than perhaps budgies or smaller birds that are happier to be left in their cages.? Tame and very interactive birds can be quite demanding and relentless until you give them the attention they are craving.? If you have your bird inside you will be constantly cleaning their cage and the mess around it as they seem to spread food and feathers everywhere. Make sure when deciding to get a bird that you choose one that will suit your lifestyle and the house or space that you have available.? Birds like Richie or larger birds can be very noisy and aren't really suitable for units or when you have close neighbours as they can disturb everyone.? Also take into account whether they will live in an outside cage or if you want an indoor bird.? Most importantly decide whether you want a tame and trainable bird that you can have out of the cage on a regular basis or one that stays in a cage.

Overall we have thoroughly enjoyed looking after Richie and we will be more than happy to look after him again.? Although Richie has been quite noisy and messy I still think I would like to get a bird one day as I think they make great pets, especially for older kids.

Until next time,
Bec

Eased Myanmar sanctions no gold rush for U.S. firms

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Signs of a boom abound in Myanmar. Flights to Yangon are full, hotel rooms booked solid. Foreign bars are packed with well-fed Westerners in khakis and jeans, 21st century prospectors drawn to this golden frontier.

Myanmar got a further boost this week from President Barack Obama, who became the first serving U.S. president to visit the long-isolated nation, an endorsement that has not gone unnoticed by global investors. But despite America's leadership in welcoming Myanmar back into the international community, U.S. companies have so far not signed any big deals ? a situation few expect to change soon.

Washington is unwinding its web of sanctions against Myanmar, but the suspension of most legal barriers to business in this nation of 60 million is unlikely to be a gold rush for American firms. Rolling back sanctions will take time, and concerns about corruption and political blowback at home complicate efforts by U.S. companies to move in big and fast. There is confusion about what is permitted, as well as onerous new reporting requirements, and lingering doubt about whether the changes, both in Myanmar and in U.S. policy, will stick.

What's at stake is one of the last big untapped consumer markets, as well as access to significant natural resources, including oil and gas, hydropower, timber, gems and some of the most fertile land on earth. Sandwiched between India and China ?the world's fastest growing major economies ? Myanmar today has some of the world's lowest levels of Internet and cellphone use, as well as a dearth of good roads, ports, hotels, hospitals, schools and electricity.

Underlying the debate about sanctions, which many companies would like to see lifted more decisively, are questions about what role American business should play in Southeast Asia's poorest country. Speaking Monday at the University of Yangon, Obama said American companies must "lead by example." His administration has sought to reinforce good business practices, encouraging transparency by requiring companies that invest more than $500,000 in Myanmar to report details to the State Department, which will make some of the information public. And Washington is banning U.S. firms from doing business with the country's biggest, and most corrupt, businessmen.

Whether those strictures ? which put American firms at a competitive disadvantage ? will achieve their desired aim is a matter of debate, but the ideas they enshrine may prove valuable in the long run.

Thant Myint-U, an author and adviser to Myanmar's reformist president Thein Sein, said that the biggest challenge facing Myanmar is finding a new economic model to support reform momentum.

"No one knows how to fix the economy after a half century of misrule in a way that's going to raise incomes and create jobs in the way we have to to keep the reform process on track," he said. Neither of the two dominant business models in Myanmar today ? alliances between crony businessmen and largely Chinese investors or leftist isolationism ? offers a good path forward for the country, he said. He hopes American businesses will help forge a third way.

The United States has taken a calibrated approach to easing sanctions, renewing or expanding some strictures even as it unwinds others. While this gives the administration leverage should Myanmar's political reform lose momentum, it creates confusion for investors.

The United States first sanctioned Myanmar in September 1988, the month after the military junta brutally cracked down on popular protests. Over the next two decades, Congress and the president responded to human rights violations and the suppression of Myanmar's democratic opposition by expanding the network of sanctions. All told, Myanmar specific sanctions are enshrined in six federal laws and a series of executive orders, often with overlapping provisions, according to a detailed study by Asian affairs specialist Michael Martin for the Congressional Research Service. In addition, there are so-called functional bans ? laws that, for example, prohibit the U.S. from providing military training and selling arms to any country deemed, like Myanmar, to use child soldiers.

Washington has been quick to respond to reform efforts in Myanmar. As Myanmar released political prisoners and held elections which saw opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi take a seat in Parliament, Washington suspended restrictions on new investment, financial services, multilateral assistance, and most recently, imports from Myanmar.

Now, the biggest remaining legal block for U.S. companies is a list of "specially designated nationals" and companies that U.S. firms are barred from doing business with because of their alleged links to violence, oppression and corrupt practices. U.S. companies complain that it's difficult to comply with this list, given the challenges of due diligence in Myanmar and the habit of cronies to pick up aliases and create complex subsidiaries.

"We're encouraging reform in the government, we can't encourage reform in individuals?" said Richard Vuylsteke, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong. He urges Washington to pare the list as fast as possible and "give these guys an incentive to integrate into the system."

Rather than revoke sanctions ? which for some would require an act of Congress ? the administration has suspended them, meaning they could be reinstated if Myanmar's reform momentum is broken. In addition, with each step forward, Washington has taken one small step back.

Three days before Obama landed in Yangon, Washington suspended its ban on most imports, a move that's expected to revitalize Myanmar's garment industry. At the same time, the administration added seven companies to the list of entities U.S. firms can't do business with. In July, when Washington suspended the ban on new investment and the provision of financial services, it also instated reporting requirements and expanded sanctions to include individuals who undermine reform, engage in human rights abuses or engage in military trade with North Korea. The White House said it was offering a clear message: "individuals who continue to engage in abusive, corrupt or destabilizing behavior going forward will not reap the rewards of reform."

Aside from sanctions, U.S. companies are subject to strict anti-corruption laws and reputational risk at home, should they choose the wrong business partner in Myanmar.

"The country is rife with corrupt business practices which would be illegal here," said Priscilla Clapp, who served as charge d 'affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Yangon from 1999 to 2002. "U.S. businesses are held to those rules. They have to condition their Burmese business partners to our rules. That's not easy because you're changing centuries of bad behavior."

In the meantime, companies from other countries are sweeping into Myanmar.

"It's been a vacuum for U.S. companies for a couple of decades," said John Goyer, senior director for Southeast Asia at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington. "They have a lot to learn about the market and the operating environment, whereas companies from China, Thailand, Malaysia know the players, they know the environment. It's home field advantage."

The U.S. is also at a disadvantage when trying to compete with companies from, for example, Japan, which can offer package deals of investment, aid and debt forgiveness padded with government money.

"Companies from Asia can come in with financing packages all wrapped up as part of the deal," Goyer said. In America, he added, "there's not unlimited government backing for private companies to go in and provide ports or railways or infrastructure."

Anthony Nelson, associate director for Myanmar at the U.S-ASEAN Business Council, said that for many U.S. companies, Myanmar is the largest country in the world where they don't have a presence. "That kind of thing doesn't come along very often," he said. "It's never going to come again."

But even Nelson is not talking of a gold rush.

"Take a look at Vietnam," he said. "When we normalized relations with Vietnam, companies came in and looked around. They maybe opened representative offices, but it was 10 or 15 years before the big boom of investment from U.S. companies. When U.S. companies move, they move in a big way, but there's time that people need to look at what they're doing."

Former Mouseketeer Bonnie dies at 68

By Associated Press

Former Mouseketeer Bonita Lynn Fields Elder, an agile dancer who showcased those skills on the 1950s children's show "The Mickey Mouse Club" and later performed on Broadway, has died in Indiana at age 68.?

originalmmc.com

Bonita Lynn Fields Elder went by the name Lynn, but used Bonnie as her Mouseketeer name since there was already a boy Mouseketeer named Lynn.

Her cousin Robbin Myers said Tuesday that Elder died Saturday at a Richmond hospital following a two-year battle with throat cancer. Elder had smoked for decades but quit after her diagnosis, Myers said.?

Elder had been living in Winchester after moving back to eastern Indiana a few years ago to care for her ailing, now-deceased mother.

She was 12 in 1957, when her dancing abilities helped her win a slot on the third season of "The Mickey Mouse Club." She auditioned in California, where her family had moved from Indiana when she was 9.

Elder always went by the name Lynn, but she adopted the stage name "Bonnie" ? a shortened version of her real first name ? at the suggestion of the show's producers because there was already a cast member, a boy, with the first name Lynn, her cousin said.

Myers, who now lives in DeBary, Fla., said she and Elder were a year apart and grew up together in Richmond until Elder's family moved to Granada, Calif. It was exciting when Elder was cast in the nationally broadcast show only a few years later, she said.

After the original "Mickey Mouse Club" show ended, Elder continued performing at California's Disneyland. Myers said that as teenagers, she and her sister Diana visited Elder at Disneyland. They were chatting with her after one show when they heard someone behind them calling out "Bonnie!"

"We turned around, and it was Walt Disney, so we got to meet Mr. Disney!" she said.

Mouseketeers Doreen, Cheryl, Wally, Bonnie and Annette, circa 1957.

According to Elder's obituary posted online by Doan & Mills Funeral Home in Richmond, she landed bit parts in several 1960s movies, including "Kissin' Cousins" with Elvis Presley and "Bye Bye Birdie" with Ann-Margret. She later appeared as a dancer on television shows and on Broadway before opening a dance studio in Santa Monica, Calif.?

According to the website of The Original Mickey Mouse Club Show, Elder appeared in 1980 on a televised program marking the 25th anniversary of "The Mickey Mouse Club." From 1981 to 1985, she took part in live Mouseketeer reunion shows at Disneyland.?

Elder was born in Walterboro, S.C., but her family moved to Richmond when she was 3 months old. She was divorced and had no children, her cousin said.?

A visitation and memorial service is scheduled for Monday at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, followed by burial at Webster Cemetery.?

Sparrow for iPhone updates with iPhone 5 and Passbook support

Sparrow, the email client for iPhone that was recently acquired by Google, surprisingly received an update that includes support for the iPhone 5's larger display and the ability to open Passbook attachments. The is surprising because with the acquisition, the developers said that there was no plan to release new features to the Sparrow apps.

Now, iPhone 5 and Passbook support aren't exactly huge new features, but still more than I was expecting. However, there are many reports of this new version causing the app to crash and be unusable, so if you use Sparrow as your primary mail client on your iPhone, you may want to stay clear of the update for now.

Do any of you still use Sparrow? How's the update working out for you?

Meg Whitman: Don't Blame Autonomy On Me - Business Insider

Don't blame the Hewlett-Packard board for signing off on buying a company that had allegedly cooked its books,?CEO Meg Whitman told Wall Street analysts today.

The board listened to reports from accountants when they okayed the $11 billion deal to buy Autonomy, she said.

Whitman was a member of the board at the time. So were all the other current board members save one, Ralph Whitworth, who joined about a month after the deal closed.

Whitman joined the board in January 2011. The Autonomy deal was announced in August of that year.

Now that HP has accused Autonomy executives of improper accounting that made the company look more profitable than it was, you have to wonder: Why didn't the HP board question the purchase price in the first place?

That's what Benjamin Reitzes, an analyst for Barclays Capital, asked on the call. Whitman's answer: The board wasn't responsible. The two people who were responsible, in her view, are now gone: her predecessor, L?o Apotheker and HP's longtime strategy chief, Shane Robison, who retired in November 2011, shortly after the Autonomy deal went through.

She didn't mention that Autonomy CEO Mike Lynch left in May, some eight months after Whitman became HP's CEO.

HP says the company only discovered the problems after a whistleblower came forward after Lynch's departure.

However, even before HP announced its deal to buy Autonomy, there were rumors that said Autonomy's growth depended on creative accounting, says the Wall Street Journal's Ben Worthen.

Whitman explained that while board members "feel terribly" that they voted for the deal, they trusted the due diligence by accountants from Deloitte. As well, Whitman said, "we hired KPMG to audit Deloitte, and neither of them saw what we now see."

Lynch has denied wrongdoing by Autonomy. He also said that Barclays and Perella Weinberg looked into Autonomy's financials before HP closed the deal.

Here's the full transcript as transcribed by Seeking Alpha.

Benjamin A. Reitzes- Barclays Capital, Research Division: Meg, with regard to the Autonomy situation, we understand what you're doing in terms of going after the folks that you feel misled you, but what about internally? What do you -- who's responsible internally for the acquisition? How are you analyzing yourself internally? The board -- I think everybody at the board was there when the Autonomy decision was made, except for Mr. Whitworth. So what's the introspective? What are you doing internally to make sure that you have the right processes? And who are you holding accountable internally, if anyone, to make sure this doesn't happen again and that maybe even there are some folks internally that need to be held responsible and we could see repercussions of this in the near future? How are you looking at it internally?

Margaret C. Whitman- Chief Executive Officer, President and Director: Yes, well, first of all, the CEO at the time and the head of strategy who led this deal are both gone, L?o and Shane Robison. With regard to the board, you're right. Most of the board was here and voted for this deal, and we feel terribly about that. What I will say is the board relied on audited financials, audited by Deloitte, not brand x accounting firm but Deloitte. And by the way, during our very extensive due diligence process, we hired KPMG to audit Deloitte, and neither of them saw what we now see after someone came forward to point us in the right direction. That said, obviously, we have not done any big acquisitions, and we will review the acquisition process. What I will say is due diligence now reports to our Chief Financial Officer. At the time, when I came to the company, I was surprised to find that due diligence and M&A reported [to] strategy as opposed to the Chief Financial Officer. I've never seen that before in my career, and that's a decision I made right away before I knew any of this. So I understand your point of view, and we have made a few changes in that regard. But in the end, you have to rely on audited financials and we did, and we will now carry on. And as you know, we've reported this to the SEC, as well as to the Serious Fraud Office, and we will take it from here.

Benjamin A. Reitzes: And in terms of internal personnel, though, based on what you see right now, the organization is -- can remain stable based on this occurrence?

Margaret C. Whitman: Yes, it can. I mean, really, the 2 people that should have been held responsible are gone, and that's the way I see it right now. So I feel good about the sort of the stability of leadership.
