Shawnee Energy Fest Weekend Provides Green Living Assistance ...

The Shawnee Energy Fest originally scheduled for May has been rescheduled due to ?Storm delay? for June 27 & 28. The festival takes place at Green Retreat and parking is available on the SIU campus in Lot 56 (near the SIU Arena) with a shuttle running to the site. Cost for the event is $10 for the weekend or $7 per day and attendees can look forward to seminars on renewable energy sources, local resources, and energy efficiency. Children under 12 attend for free.

Presenters will include former Green Party gubernatorial candidate Rich Whitney and a variety of speakers on living green. Music and entertainment will be available as well as seminars on alternative energy options and saving energy. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

In keeping with the focus of the event, all the music for the event will be presented off the grid. ?Our music will all be off of the grid, powered by Home Eco, St. Louis?s first environmentally friendly home products store.

Home Eco is providing a system that consists of three Unisolar 68 watt panels on the roof, an Invertek 1500 watt inverter, a Morningstar MPPT charge controller with the remote display and a 200AH battery pack,? according to the Shawnee Energy Fest website.

The Shawnee Energy Festival weekend-long program will feature more than 40 workshops including four specific ?tracks? of study: sustainable energy, energy efficiency, local alternatives, and a kid?s program. The programs are aimed at helping people to live well while reducing their carbon footprint and dependence on fossil fuels. Another goal of the energy and home improvement festival is to show people what resources are available to them locally for green home improvements, including solar panel innovations, wind power and geothermal options.

The goals of the weekend are to ?cover topics such as renewable energy, organic farming and bio-intensive home gardening, forest issues, conservation, recycling, verma-composting, local foods, bicycle maintenance and repair, geothermal energy, bio-fuels, composting, solar power, straw baling and permaculture, off-grid living and power smart pricing for your home.?

Shawnee Energy Festival participants will also have a chance to explore and tour Green Retreat, an eco-friendly lodge and retreat center. The overall hope of the project is to raise awareness about green living and energy sustainability options and assure people that living in a more environmentally-friendly does not have to mean a trip back to the dark ages. Among the items on display will be the ?RV of the future?, a vehicle powered by wind and solar energy as well as ethanol as an example of luxuries that are available to people living a green lifestyle.
