"No Easy Day," written by a former Navy SEAL who helped take down Osama bin Laden, claims the al-Qaida leader did not defend himself during the raid. The book will become available on Sept. 4, earlier than the anticipated Sept. 11 release date. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.
By Jeff Black, NBC News
A Navy SEAL who took part in the raid on Osama bin Laden?s compound and witnessed the killing of the 9/11 mastermind says a book he wrote about the mission is not a political statement.
Responding to criticism that the book was intended to influence the presidential election, the former SEAL told CBS News that he wrote it to honor victims of the 9/11 terror attacks and the hundreds of people who made the raid a success.
The book, entitled ?No Easy Day,? had been scheduled for release on Sept. 11 to commemorate the attack on the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon in 2001, but it instead will be made available on Sept. 4. The book is already No. 1 in sales on Amazon.com.

CBS News said Mark Owen ? a fake name meant to hide his identity???was disguised for the "60 Minutes" interview as a security measure. His voice was also altered.
"He has been professionally made up by a professional makeup artist to look completely different than his true self," Kevin Tedesco, executive director of communications of "60 Minutes," told NBC News on Thursday. "He was fully comfortable to go on camera without it, but we used makeup."?
Some media outlets learned Owen?s real name and published it, sending him into hiding.
?You know, if these?crazies on either side of the aisle want to make it political, shame on them,? Owen told CBS. ?This is a book about September 11th, and it needs to rest on September 11th. Not be brought into the political arena, because this???this has nothing to do with politics.

In the interview, Owen emphasizes that hundreds of Americans participated in the advance work that led to the raid on the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. That included collecting intelligence, detailed planning and even building a full-sized replica of the compound for training.?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? The Moon is believed to have formed from a collision, 4.5 billion years ago, between Earth and an impactor the size of Mars, known as "Theia." Over the past decades scientists have simulated this process and reproduced many of the properties of the Earth-Moon system; however, these simulations have also given rise to a problem known as the Lunar Paradox: the Moon appears to be made up of material that would not be expected if the current collision theory is correct.
A recent study published in Icarus proposes a new perspective on the theory in answer to the paradox.
If current theories are to be believed, analyses of the various simulations of the Earth-Theia collision predict that the Moon is mostly made up of material from Theia. However, studying materials from both Earth and the Moon, shows remarkable similarities. In fact, elements found on the Moon show identical isotopic properties to those found on Earth.
Given it is very unlikely that both Theia and Earth had identical isotopic compositions (as all other known solar system bodies, except the Moon, appear to be different) this paradox casts doubt over the dominant theory for the Moon formation. Moreover, for some elements, like Silicon, the isotopic composition is the result of internal processes, related to the size of the parent body. Given Theia was smaller than Earth, its Silicon isotope composition should have definitely been different from that of Earth's mantle.
A group of researchers from the University of Bern, Switzerland, have now made a significant breakthrough in the story of the formation of the Moon, suggesting an answer to this Lunar Paradox. They explored a different geometry of collisions than previously simulated, also considering new impacts configurations such as the so-called, "hit-and-run collisions," where a significant amount of material is lost into space on orbits unbound to Earth..
"Our model considers new impact parameters, which were never tested before. Besides the implications for the Earth-Moon system itself, the considerably higher impact velocity opens up new possibilities for the origin of the impactor and therefore also for models of terrestrial planet formation," explains lead author of the study, Andreas Reufer.
"While none of the simulations presented in their research provides a perfect match for the constraints from the actual Earth-Moon-system, several do come close," adds Alessandro Morbidelli, one of the Icarus' Editors. "This work, therefore, suggests that a future exhaustive exploration of the vast collisional parameter space may finally lead to the long-searched solution of the lunar paradox."

There has been a negative stigma that has been attached to outsourcing in the corporate world due to the recent political battles about the practice. But there can be specific applications of this process that, when handled domestically, can help a sales team save time and resources in acquiring new business and finding worthwhile clients.
The idea of outsourcing certain aspects of the sales process is one that many sales management teams struggle with, as the decision to do things in-house or pay someone to perform these tasks is not a simple determination, even in an uncertain economy.
Managers need to sit down and weigh the pros and cons of each decision when looking at all aspects of their business, as this method of handling the work may be a solution to one area of the business and disruptive to others.
Lead generation may be one of the areas where it benefits a company to hire people on the outside to do work that may not be handled adequately by the existing staff. Lead gen relies on individuals who have the ability to cold call someone with the intention of getting an appointment, but many people struggle with the rejection associated with the process.
Instead of training people and finding the right individuals for the job, a sales management team can find a firm that already has experts in this regard. Outsourcing this work may not only make sense in terms of a higher success rate, but it could also impact the company's bottom line.
Spending money to make sure that employees are trained to effectively generate new leads is often a big expenditure, and when some potential clients slip through the cracks this means that even more of a hit is being taken by the firm. The difficulty of lead gen has also increased, as many businesses have trained their people to be extremely picky in who they contact.
Walls are being put up by these businesses and it is becoming harder and harder to tear down these barriers. It may be good to outsource this work, as people who are tasked with doing this as their sole responsibility are going to be much better at getting in touch with potential clients.
The company that you will hire will have a smaller focus and will understand the market within which they are operating. They have hired people who are wired for this cold-calling position and there should be a sense of expertise that a management team can see in dealing with the business.?
This type of outsourcing resembles the classic notion of division of labor, as these people will excel at cold-calling because of the repetition associated with their job. Their work will be combined with the efforts of others in order to produce a final product.
While the outsourcing of lead generation may make sense for a sales management team, more specific functions should be kept in-house. The more involved jobs, such as inside and outside reps, need to be given to employees working for the parent company.
Another company is not going to handle this work with the same effectiveness, as their workers may not bring the same level of dedication to the job and will not feel as strongly about the given product or service.
These individuals won't have the same passion and knowledge, they will not be involved with the customers and their co-workers will not be getting the feedback from the potential clients.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Apple won its long-anticipated jury trial against Samsung on Thursday and was awarded $1.05 billion in damages by a jury. I think it is highly unlikely that the decision will be overturned on appeal, so the case is likely to establish an important precedent, as I anticipated in an earlier post I wrote in 2011. My prediction then, however, was that Apple would win through a private settlement instead of a jury verdict.
I predicted a private settlement because of the high stakes involved and the risks open to both companies if the issue ultimately was taken to a jury. Apple?s risk was that the jury would invalidate some or all of the patents it had asserted, a defensive maneuver that Samsung adopted during litigation. Samsung?s risk was that it would be found to have infringed Apple?s patents by copying user interfaces and other design aspects of Apple?s products. In the end, and to the surprise of many, both companies rolled the die and Apple came out on top.
The $1.05 billion verdict is a big coup, not just for Apple, but for product designers in general. For a long time, product design was perceived in industry and in legal policy-making circles as an intellectual property and strategic backwater. That has changed, however, due to consumers? increasing aesthetic sophistication and a crowded global marketplace.
Design is starting to play an essential role in product differentiation and branding. An empirical study I conducted with two marketing scholars in 2009, published in?The Journal of Marketing, found a positive association between trademark ownership and financial performance. This link between the two suggests that companies which pay attention to the legal aspects of branding through trademark registration reap greater rewards.
Elsewhere, I have written about the rare capability within firms that generates product shape trademarks. Product shape and packaging trademarks, often referred to as ?trade dress,? were among the arrows in Apple?s legal quiver in the Samsung trial. I believe the Apple-Samsung case signals that product design and trademarks will be increasingly applied during new product development and asserted during litigation among companies across industries.
I make a career of teaching legal studies to business students. In my lectures, I invariably cover the subject of intellectual property management and strategy. Had Samsung won at trial against Apple, I would have cynically advocated what I perceived as Samsung?s business and intellectual property strategy. That is, I would have advocated in favor of free-riding from an industry leader to quickly gain a foothold and increase market share. Had Samsung won, this strategy would be effective, since the risks of infringement and damages would have been minimal. Once the fast follower and design imitator establishes their foothold, they can then compete against the innovator based on a cost advantage. From a business perspective, this clearly would have been an effective tactic.
Given Apple?s victory, however, Samsung?s strategy is no longer risk free or optimal. Instead, a better strategy is to be aware of competitor?s intellectual property rights and embrace innovation. This will require investing in design capabilities to distinguish products, which is how Apple secured its leadership position.
A copycat strategy may still be adopted by firms that want to quickly enter a technology market, such as mobile devices. After the Apple-Samsung case, however, that strategy became significantly riskier, much to to the benefit of pioneering innovators everywhere.

Late on Thursday, Armstrong said he would no longer fight allegations from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that he cheated throughout his career by using performance enhancing drugs.
"Enough is enough," said Armstrong, a cancer survivor considered one of the all-time greats in his sport, in a statement.
The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency announced it would strip Armstrong of his titles and ban him from competitive cycling.
Nike, the world's biggest sportswear maker, is a longtime supporter of Armstrong and Livestrong, his organization to help cancer survivors and raise money for cancer research.
Since 2004, Nike has helped Livestrong raise over $100 million and created the Livestrong yellow wristbands that became a global phenomenon with over 84 million bands distributed.
Trek Bicycle Corp has sponsored Armstrong since 1999 and sponsors the Radio Shack Nissan Trek team at the Tour de France.
The Wisconsin-based bike company said it is monitoring developments. It has not pulled its sponsorship of Armstrong in the triathlons he has done or other bike rides.

TWO brothers will harness the power of sibling rivalry to shoot for gold at the Paralympics.
Adam and David Knott, of Chandler?s Ford, are competing for Team GB in the Paralympic Goalball squad. Adam, 17, a student at Peter Symonds College , Winchester , said: ?We both want to be better than each other, so we really push each other to be the best we can.
?To represent team GB in front of seven and a half thousand people will bring so much pride to myself and my brother.?
David, 15, who attends Thornden School in Chandler?s Ford, said: ?We both mainly play in the same position, but at the moment he?s a bit better than me, so he?s normally before me in the team choice.?

Enterprise networking occasions are an effective way to build your contacts and enhance your business. Nevertheless, it?s essential to you should definitely do extra than simply present up if you wish to get the most out of them. Listed below are just a few easy ideas to help you get extra from the enterprise networking events you attend.
To start with, you ought to be real and sincere about your business. People respect honesty and genuineness, and you will achieve their belief you probably have these qualities. For those who don?t, others will decide up on it and be much less prepared to do enterprise with you. Some individuals seem to have the mentality that honesty and sales aren?t completely compatible. This is a very short sighted mentality. Enterprise is all about constructing belief and relationships. You can?t try this efficiently in the long run without honesty.
When you?re meeting others at networking occasions, it?s best to first give attention to how you can help them. Take the time to listen to them and understand their business. Try to think of ways you may give them referrals, reasonably than thinking of how they can deliver you business. Should you assist them construct their business, you?ll earn their trust and they?re going to feel compelled to return the favor. In the event you first focus on what they can do for you, they will sense that and be less prepared to do enterprise with you or refer you to others. There?s a quite simple precept that no matter goes round comes around. If you do good things for others, good issues will come to you.
If you meet contacts at a networking occasion, make sure to write down things about them and their business. They may see that you?re taking the time to understand them, and this data can be very helpful to you later on. Bear in mind, you need to give attention to the right way to refer them business, so that you need to be able to remember particulars about them after the networking event is over. An easy tip is to write down on the back of their enterprise card. That method you do not lose the information.
After the networking event is over, be sure to observe up promptly together with your new contacts. Often a fast e-mail will do the trick, and the individual you might be contacting will really feel grateful you took the time to follow up. You?ll want to add some detail about them when you write the email. In case you discovered one thing fascinating about them or their enterprise in your dialog, make a short mention of it. On the same time, you need to maintain the e-mail brief and to the purpose, in order that it is not a burden to read. Their schedule might be very busy like yours, and also you want to respect their time.
Briefly, to be a profitable networker, you will need to be courteous and consider how to help others. When you dwell by this precept, you?ll develop stable relationships and others will naturally want to refer business to you.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rebuked his far-right foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, on Wednesday for suggesting Palestinians should vote out their president to help revive peace efforts.
Netanyahu's opening of a public rift with his coalition ally appeared to be an attempt to minimize any diplomatic fallout at a time when Israel is trying to persuade world powers to ramp up sanctions against Iran over its nuclear activities.
In a letter to Catherine Ashton, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Lieberman accused President Mahmoud Abbas of "acting to undermine attempts to renew the peace process".
Lieberman urged the Palestinians to hold a long-delayed election to choose "a new, legitimate, hopefully realistic" leadership that can "bring progress with Israel".
Abbas was elected in 2005 and his original mandate expired in 2009. However, plans for a new ballot have been regularly postponed because of a deep schism within Palestinian politics.
Through an official in his office, Netanyahu swiftly distanced himself from Lieberman's comments. Lieberman heads the Yisrael Beitenu party, which holds 15 of the 66 seats that Netanyahu's coalition controls in the 120-member parliament.
"What was written in the letter by the foreign minister does not correctly represent the position of the prime minister or of the government as a whole," said the official, who declined to be identified by name.
"While the Palestinian leadership under Abu Mazen (Abbas) has created difficulties that have prevented the resumption of talks, Israel is committed to working with the Palestinian leadership to restarting the dialogue, and of course Israel does not interfere in election processes in other places," the official said.
TALKS FROZEN
A spokesman for the Western-backed Abbas told the official Palestinian news agency WAFA that Lieberman's statements "do not contribute anything to creating an environment of peace" and he urged Netanyahu to denounce them.
U.S.-hosted peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians collapsed shortly after they restarted in 2010, in a dispute over Israeli settlement-building in the occupied West Bank.
Abbas has said negotiations could resume only if Israel halted settlement construction. Netanyahu, who refused in 2010 to extend a 10-month moratorium on housing starts in the occupied West Bank, has dismissed preconditions.
"In a calculated manner, Mr. Abbas is focusing his dialogue with the international community on the subject of settlements," wrote Lieberman, who himself lives in a settlement.
"Unfortunately, the international community tends to accept this discourse, lock, stock and barrel, without criticism or a nuanced approach," he added.
Palestinians fear settlements, built on territory Israel captured in a 1967 war and which they seek for a future state, will deny them a viable country in any peace deal.
The World Court and the European Union regard settlements as illegal under international law. Israel disputes this and cites historical and Biblical links to the West Bank, an area it calls Judea and Samaria.
Sensor detects glucose in saliva and tears for diabetes testing Public release date: 23-Aug-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Researchers have created a new type of biosensor that can detect minute concentrations of glucose in saliva, tears and urine and might be manufactured at low cost because it does not require many processing steps to produce.
"It's an inherently non-invasive way to estimate glucose content in the body," said Jonathan Claussen, a former Purdue doctoral student and now a research scientist at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. "Because it can detect glucose in the saliva and tears, it's a platform that might eventually help to eliminate or reduce the frequency of using pinpricks for diabetes testing. We are proving its functionality."
Claussen and Purdue doctoral student Anurag Kumar led the project, working with Timothy Fisher, a Purdue professor of mechanical engineering, D. Marshall Porterfield, a professor of agricultural and biological engineering, and other researchers at the university's Birck Nanotechnology Center.
Findings are detailed in a research paper appearing online this week in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.
"Most sensors typically measure glucose in blood," Claussen said. "Many in the literature aren't able to detect glucose in tears and the saliva. What's unique is that we can sense in all four different human serums: the saliva, blood, tears and urine. And that hasn't been shown before."
The paper, featured on the journal's cover, was written by Claussen, Kumar, Fisher, Porterfield, and Purdue researchers David B. Jaroch, M. Haseeb Khawaja, and Allison B. Hibbard.
The sensor has three main parts: layers of nanosheets resembling tiny rose petals made of a material called graphene, which is a single-atom-thick film of carbon; platinum nanoparticles; and the enzyme glucose oxidase.
Each petal contains a few layers of graphene stacked on each other. The edges of the petals have dangling, incomplete chemical bonds, defects where the platinum nanoparticles can attach. Electrodes are formed by combining the nanosheet petals and platinum nanoparticles. Then the glucose oxidase attaches to the platinum nanoparticles. The enzyme converts glucose to peroxide, which generates a signal on the electrode.
"Typically, when you want to make a nanostructured biosensor you have to use a lot of processing steps before you reach the final biosensor product," Kumar said. "That involves lithography, chemical processing, etching and other steps. The good thing about these petals is that they can be grown on just about any surface, and we don't need to use any of these steps, so it could be ideal for commercialization."
In addition to diabetes testing, the technology might be used for sensing a variety of chemical compounds to test for other medical conditions.
"Because we used the enzyme glucose oxidase in this work, it's geared for diabetes," Claussen said. "But we could just swap out that enzyme with, for example, glutemate oxidase, to measure the neurotransmitter glutamate to test for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, or ethanol oxidase to monitor alcohol levels for a breathalyzer. It's very versatile, fast and portable."
The technology is able to detect glucose in concentrations as low as 0.3 micromolar, far more sensitive than other electrochemical biosensors based on graphene or graphite, carbon nanotubes and metallic nanoparticles, Claussen said
"These are the first findings to report such a low sensing limit and at the same time such a wide sensing range," he said.
The sensor is able to distinguish between glucose and signals from other compounds that often cause interference in sensors: uric acid, ascorbic acid and acetaminophen, which are commonly found in the blood. Unlike glucose, those compounds are said to be electroactive, which means they generate an electrical signal without the presence of an enzyme.
Glucose by itself doesn't generate a signal but must first react with the enzyme glucose oxidase. Glucose oxidase is used in commercial diabetes test strips for conventional diabetes meters that measure glucose with a finger pinprick.

Hybridization of nanoscale metals and carbon nanotubes into composite nanomaterials has produced some of the best-performing sensors to date. The challenge remains to develop scalable nanofabrication methods that are amenable to the development of sensors with broad sensing ranges. A scalable nanostructured biosensor based on multilayered graphene petal nanosheets (MGPNs), Pt nanoparticles, and a biorecognition element (glucose oxidase) is presented. The combination of zero-dimensional nano-particles on a two-dimensional support that is arrayed in the third dimension creates a sensor platform with exceptional characteristics. The versatility of the biosensor platform is demonstrated by altering biosensor performance (i.e., sensitivity, detection limit, and linear sensing range) through changing the size, density, and morphology of electrodeposited Pt nanoparticles on the MGPNs. This work enables a robust sensor design that demonstrates exceptional performance with enhanced glucose sensitivity (0.3 M detection limit, 0.01 mM linear sensing range), a long stable shelf-life (> 1 month), and a high selectivity over electroactive, interfering species commonly found in human serum samples.

Mocana, a startup that is dedicated to securing the Internet of things has raised $25 million in a Series D round led by Trident Capital. While securing devices is Mocana?s biggest business, the fastest growing product is Mocana?s solution for protecting mobile applications.
Security in the age of bring-your-own-device and the Internet of things is making life more difficult for IT managers, who have to secure not just an exploding number of devices but also the applications and software that runs on them. But that, in turn, is opening up more opportunities for companies like Mocana, a security specialist that is announcing $25 million in new funding.
Mocana?s Series D round is being led by?Trident Capital with participation from current investors?Intel Capital, Shasta, Southern Cross and Symantec. The new money, which comes on top of $22 million previously raised, will be used to help Mocana further pursue its two main lines of business.
The company works with device makers to build security into a growing array of devices, not just PCs, tablets and smartphones but all kinds of connected machines. It has more than 200 customers across five major sectors: smart grid, mobile and consumer electronics, healthcare, datacom and federal.
But the faster growing business is Mocana?s mobile application protection (MAP) tool, which allows IT managers to secure apps and set different security settings for them without having to control the underlying mobile device. That?s an increasingly important business as more enterprises look to deploy apps on employee-controlled devices.
Adrian Turner, Mocana?s CEO, told me that the MAP business accounts for 20 percent of its revenues but will claim half of the company?s business in three years.?Mocana?s MAP competes against Good Technology?s Good Dynamics, which allows?independent software developers, corporate customers and systems integrators to build and secure apps using Good Technology?s SDK.
Mocana is backed by some big security players including Intel, which bought McAfee and Symantec. Turner said their continued investment reflects the progress Mocana has made in securing smart devices and applications. I?ll be interested to see if either of them looks at Mocana as a potential acquisition target down the road. With the growth of connected devices and more apps to secure on employee machines, Mocana is likely to have plenty of business in the years to come.
