Following the loss of multiple former NFL players like Junior Seau to suicide in recent years, there?s been an increase in attention paid to the effects of brain injury sustained through multiple concussions and whether trauma to the brain increases suicidal tendencies.
While more research is needed to establish a definitive link between chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) ? the brain condition that?s been discovered in high-impact sports athletes who?ve committed suicide ? and an increase in depression and feelings of suicide, the NFL is taking a proactive approach to supporting the mental health of its current and former players through the launch of a support hotline, Life Line.
The confidential and around-the-clock service is available to players and their families in crisis and will provide them with financial and medical assistance. The Life Line website also features video messages from current and former players encouraging those in need to talk to someone and seek help.
If you or someone you love is struggling with depression, visit the Vitals Depression Patient Guide for information on the symptoms, the doctors who treat it, what to expect at your doctor appointment, and more.
